I am new to scanning. I just got my first scanner a week ago. Can anyone suggest some good frequencies? I could really use Novato Police and Fire. I have noticed that most frequencies are 5 digits while a few are 4. Anyone know why that is? Also, what do I program into my scanner for the 4 digit frequncies? I have a Uniden BC60 XLT-1 in case that helps.
Thanks.

Your BC60 scanner isn't going to do you any good in Novato. They, and most of Marin, are now on a 400 mHz digital trunk system. You need a digital scanner like the Radio Shack Pro-96 to listen to a digital system. Those 4 and 5 number groups you see are talk groups, not frequencies. You need a trunking scanner to be able to use talk groups on conventional trunk systems as well.

Marin County Sheriff and Fire are still on lowband (S.O., 39.24, 39.52, Fire, 37.100) so you can listen to them on your BC60. Napa and Sonoma counties are still on conventional VHF and UHF so you can listen to them also. If you want to listen to Marin, you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy a digital trunk scanner. You can do a search here to find out more about digital and trunking. A digital scanner costs between $400 and $500 depending on brand and what's on sale.
