I'm new to scanning, but found out my area is going digital, about 75% done. Thinking about getting a BCD996XT..lol...if your gonna jump in, might as well go full throttle I say. My question is should I get it preprogrammed for my area, cost at Scanner Master is $70, seems a little high, for the same money I can get a subscription here and software and do it myself, or is this something beyond my capabilities for now. I know I can learn, but how long usually does it take to get the knowledge to be doing this stuff on your own and actually know what your doing, I don't want to spend a month playing with this thing and not herre anything. I have a degree in computer programming, can't be much harder then that...can it...lol...Thanks in advance for any help.

I wouldn't get the programming, you will get a programming cable with your radio I think, take that t & ad a premium membership ( 7,50 for 30 days) and get the TRIAL version of the software for you scanner OR freescan & import ( select the frequencies) that YOU want to monitor ) and learn in th process. ALso check the Arkansas forum & most likely will be some one with a pre made file you can use & modify right off or when you get used to it
