Today while driving in the Verona area, I received a very strong signal on 858.0625, PL 203.5 Hz, that sounded to be a simulcast of a Newark Police channel. Does anyone know if they are doing some kind of testing on 800?

There was a report a while ago that Newark would be switching to a digital trunking system. What would be the purpose of these new frequencies?

Does the Newark Police Chief live in Eagle Rock? Could this be his/her own private feed?

Eagle Rock is an area of West Orange top of the mountain where most of the communications towers are located 600 feet above sea level. The UHF Newark PD channels are received loud and clear in West Orange. This is no one's private feed. It is part of the proposed trunking system for the city of Newark.

I live right in this area. There is one tower that is located within the confines of Eagle Rock Reservation, in the middle of the woods. There is another tower located across the street from the reservation near the intersection of Eagle Rock Ave. and Prospect Ave. Also about a mile south on Prospect Ave. is another antenna farm which includes WNSH radio and I believe the West Orange TRS has a transmitter here as well.

The large tower located in eagle Rock reservation in the woods is on County property and houses all the Essex County transmitters, as well as The NJICS .... The tower across the street by the diner is primarily used for business transmitters but has some local government and federal government transmitters. The tower at the corner of Mount pleasant and prospect houses West Orange town 800 TRS. I lived in West Orange for 20 years, and knew the Tower owner on eagle Rock and Prospect personally

These are probably among the planned frequencies for the system, which is supposed to be 800MHz P25 Phase II.

Also if what you're hearing is up on Eagle Rock, theoretically, it should have some dang good penetration into the Upper Roseville, Fairmount and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. So wouldn't be completely unreasonable for a Newark site to be there. Overkill though.

Without getting to deep; the plan is for an 8+ simulcast P25 mixed 7/8x public safety communication trunked system that would be available for use primary to the City of Newark and Essex County.

Phase I is to bring up a limited number of sites to supplement the current NJICS coverage in Newark on conventional operations.

So, these 3 new 800 channels are just additional conventional analog channels for Newark PD., for the present time. Should they be added to the database for Newark PD ?

I would say add them to the DB since we're looking at another 2 years before they are migrated to the new trunked system.

If I understood the slow growth memorandum correctly these three frequencies will be used as soon as possible as add an additional capacity channels for Newark PD...one is broadcasting with a PL tone indicating possibilities of current use.

Yes they are currently in use as conventional channels and then will eventually be migrated to the new digital trunking system when that comes online in 2021.

The immediate need is to address a conventional channel for fire operations outside of the NJICS system.
