Hello all just joined up a few days ago and have been looking over the site. Hopefully I posting in the right area

I am quoting from another thread"
GlobalNorth
My other complaint about "articles" such as these is that the best device for one person is going to be the worst for someone else. Example: a California based listener wanting to get the CHP is going to need a scanner that excels in the VHF - Low band. Most scanners don't cut it. That listener moves to Arizona and wants to listen to AZDPS is going to need a radio that excels in the UHF and the 700 MHz bands as AZDPS slowly builds out their 700 MHz system. VHF Low is effectively dead in Arizona."

What he said is true to me. I live in Shelbyville Indiana. I wanted to hear my local PD( 154.785),local airport and Guard post if possibble. SO i did very light research and figured that a Uniden BC75xlt would get the PD some of the airport maybe a couple channels for the guard post. Well after getting it and only getting some of the tower traffic no PD nothing from the guard post witch is no surprise. I started digging deeper into what I needed to get. Found I need a trunking digital. So i found a PRO 96 and just picked up cause it was local and would do most of what i wanted it do if not all while i figure out things. Plus it had my county and and others already programed in it. I know I over paid for it but I had it in my hands and could start learning my ADD kicked in. Knowing what I know now i am on the hunt for a base scanner. That all said looking for advise from folks local who can point me to the best one for my area . Been eyeing the Uniden BCD996P2 as I want a Base not a handheld. Not wanting to spend or want to waste 1000s of dollars.Plus IMO it can be overweIming filtering what you need. also need an app to help me program as my eyes suck these days and i suffer from fat guy fingers aswell. Keep in mind I am learning so be gental.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like Shelbyville Police Dispatch is on the SAFE-T system and in Shelby County they are using a simulcast system. So more than likely you will be wanting something more along the lines of the SDS100 or SDS200. The SDS scanners from Uniden are the most recommended scanners for simulcast systems to avoid simulcast interference.

If you have simulcast issues I agree. SDS200 base is what you are looking for. Also comes with free software that is used to easily program it and also update both available system database and firmware. Software can be downloaded and installed free to check it out.

Excellent radio.

I looked at the SDS200 and was turned off by the 800 bucks on Amazon! but i will look at it closer for sure.

Now for something i just now realized on my Pro96 I just got the programing cable late yesterday. On Win96 I can see the programed channels and make changes and upload them with out fail. Had to lock out a couple channels do not like the chatter from the jail aswell from the hospital. When I look at my list on the Pro96 none of the frequencies match what is on the this sites list. Yet it is working. Also I cant seem to find the ID lists on this site as well. What am I missing or failing to understand?

The 5-digit numbers are the Talk Groups.

You'll need to add all the talk groups you want to hear.

Simulcast problems are location specific. If the Pro-96 does not have any breakup, garbled audio, or missing transmissions on the SAFE-T system, the BCD996P2 should work fine at your location. It sounds like you are very lucky to be in a sweet spot, possibly close to one of the towers. You can use FreeSCAN programming software and it is FREE! Here is a link to the software: Downloads - Sixspot Software

so i have been looking into the SDS200 and BCD996P2 a lot more closely. I do not have any issues that i know of with simulcast. At least i do not hear anything odd or lack of info. From what i can see i can only pick up one tower.

Both of these units require paid up grades? what am i missing for the cost of both units they should come ready to rock fully unlocked?

Again Thanks for any and all help.

Neither REQUIRE the upgrades; they're optional. If you don't want them you don't need to buy them.

Uniden has to pay royalties and licensing fees for each and every scanner that is upgraded to Provoice, NXDN, or DMR. Rather than ship every scanner with the upgrades functioning and charging everyone for the licensing fees, only those users that wish to use those modes need to purchase the upgrades... much better system for everyone.

You can purchase and install the upgrades yourself, just takes a couple of minutes. And doing it yourself directly from Uniden costs much less than the dealers charge at the time of purchase. Don't pay a dealer to install any upgrades.

The FreeSCAN software will work fine for P25 systems, but does not support DMR or NXDN. Other than Indiana Live Casino and Knauf Fiberglass which use DMR, I don't see any other systems in Shelby County. If you should decide to purchase a paid upgrade, You would need either ARC-XT or ProScan software to program a BCD996P2.

FWIW, there are DMR and NXDN public safety in most of the counties that surround Shelby county.
