I just bought a PRO-96 as a first-time scanner user. I'm lost. Can someone tell me why just scanning the pre-programmed frequencies won't pick up all the conversations I can get on the police bands etc. verses doing all this programming stuff that I don't understand. Also, in the 855MHz area, I'm getting a lot of frequencies that sound like foghorns or something, which are very annoying. What are these? How can I get rid of them? Should I delete them? :(

No you shouldn't delete them. Those are data streams for trunking system control channels. You're gonna need to use those. My best advice to you is to read up on trunking. Search the boards for trunking explanations and what not. Once you get the basic idea try programming it in to your scanner following every step in the manual precisely.

Even if you don't fully understand trunking you should just go to the database and find a trunking system that is near you. Go ahead and program it. Once you do you'll have a much better understanding of how the whole thing works.

You should also go to www.starrsoft.com and register a copy of win96. Then you should go to Radio Shack and buy the programming cable for the radio. I think the sku# is 20-289. This will help you understand the layout of the scanner and make programming much easier

The Pro96 really is a great radio once you get the hang of. It is kind of tricky to use though. Even some of the more experienced scanner folks have had some trouble with the learning curve. My advice to you is keep at it. Once you'll figure it out, you will have discovered a really great hobby!

As doug408 pointed out in response to the same question you asked in the Radio Shack Forum under the First Time Scanner User topic. Not programming the radio for your own personal preferrences is like buying an expensive TV and giving the remote to someone else who constantly and randomly changes the channels. If they only pause on each channel for a moment, you will have no idea what is on TV.

Reposting the same question over and over is not going to change the outcome and only draw undesired attention to you.

I'm here a lot
Lou, being the snoop that I am, I checked other posts to see what
toddeus may be hearing and what he may be looking for.

He was enquiring about Saratoga Springs and Albany area.

These regular freq's should start him out.
Don't know if the Moto SmartZone system is operating yet.

I bet dollars to donuts that he's hearing the OpenSky New York Wireless system in the 855 range, check the link and freq list
