Welcome to RadioReference, beav01

Start here on using your scanner:
Getting Started with your GRE/RS Object Oriented Scanner - The RadioReference Wiki

This page describes the software available for your Pro-197. You will be using the USB cable to connect your scanner to your PC.

There are three programs you can use with your scanner. Links to find them are in this same page.

WIN500
PSREdit500
ARC500

All three have a 30 day free trial period. So download any or all of them & see which you like best. You'll get varying opinions on which is 'best', as most everyone has a favorite. If you try all three, then you may find you like one better than the others, perhaps because it's on screen display is similar to other programs you've used before. Any of the three will program your scanner.

My preference is WIN500 ($35.00 to purchase after the trial period). Besides programming, you also get logging and recording as well as virtual control.

ARC500 has two versions. Basic, which is $39.95 after the trial period, is only for programming. If you want to add the logging and recording options, then you'd need the Pro version, $69.95.

PSREdit500 is also $35.00. Virtual control is offered via a separate program included in the package.

While you can use any of the trhee to manually program your scanner through the keyboard, you would need a Premium Subscription to RadioReference if you want to import the information from the database directly into the software.

I use WIN500 - It is very friendly and also allow computer control of the scanner. If don't already have one, the radio to computer cable may be hard to find.
