• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Nextel Direct Talk (Not Direct Connect)

I have never looked into a source for new batteries. It might be worth checking with Southern LINC ttp://www.southernlinc.com/ since they are still iDen. I would also check directly with Motorola, too.

Also, just curious is everybody here keeps an old SIM card in the unit (even though the service is no longer active).

I never had an i355, so I am not sure about Group Talk. You might check with Howard Forums or BatLabs.

hello, i am new to the site. i have recently bought some 355's and been fooling around with them. i have figured out how to get them onto private single communications. But i am unsure abou thte group private communication. what i am wanting to do is be able to privately group talk and then privately talk to individuals. can this be done??

You can't privately talk to a group. Anyone with the channel/code combination will hear the conversation. http://support.sprint.com/global/pdf/user_guides/motorola/i355/i355_by_motorola_ug.pdf

You can talk to a "group", meaning that each i355 is on the same Channel and Code. I did try setting up a group contact with every radios private numbers (sort of like a group private call) but the i355 told me this was not possible in DT mode. You can set the Code for PVT ONLY, meaning private call only, IIRC, this defaults each radio to private calls only.

You can privately talk to individuals, even though every radio is on the same Channel and Code. First, you need to set up each radio with a unique number. Go to main menu->my info. I've named each radio "Radio1", "Radio2", etc. In the Line 1 field, assign a unique number to each radio. The longer the number, the harder it would be for someone else to figure it out to spoof it. Save this, and then power down and restart your phone for the changes you've made to take effect. Set up unique numbers for each radio you have. For example, for Radio1, the unique number would be 1340987601, with 01 being the radio number. Radio2 would be 1340987602, and so on.

Next, create a Contact for each radio. Go to Contacts->New Contact. Put in the name of each radio you have, other than the one that you are setting up the contact on. In the Other field, put in the unique number you set up above that is assigned to each radio.

To transmit privately between radios without the other radios hearing you, go to the Contacts menu, then using the up or down buttons, highlight the contact you wish to contact privately. Then, push the PTT button to call that radio. The receiving radio will respond to you privately as well until either the call times out or you push the end key. My wife and I use this feature when we need to speak to each other privately without our kids or other family members using our radios hearing us.

There is also a huge thread here that has more information on these radios.

Also, just curious is everybody here keeps an old SIM card in the unit (even though the service is no longer active).

I use either old SIM cards or unactivated SIM cards for Boost mobile that I bought off eBay. I keep them in the radios.

I believe the batteries for the i365 can be used in the i355, but i've never verified this.

the only thing I hate is the "Loud Chirp" sound it makes before talking.

+100. I wish I could turn down the volume of the chirp - it's louder than the volume setting that you are using - or turn it off. I do have each one of my i355s vibrating when the receive a call. IIRC, one fella looked into turning off the beep, but couldn't find any way to do so in the iDEN RSS.

Very interesting, if somewhat old, thread. I looked into the "old Nextels" some time back and decided to get a couple of the Motorola DTR units instead. They go for a pretty penny on eBay but I managed to find a couple of DTR410s cheap. They use a system similar to, but not identical to the Nextels so they won't talk to each other. I found too many things I didn't like about the DTR units to keep using them. Among them was that "beep". Also, two units have to exchange data before you can communicate. I know this is to prevent you calling someone repeatedly who is out of range. The ones I got didn't have replaceable antennas which reduced range some. I bought a programming cable only to find out that the firmware was too old to use the programming software. So, I bought one of the little keyboards that connect to the bottom to enable programming. After studying the manual for a while, I decided they were too complicated for my use. I did range test them and got just over a mile. My biggest complaint with any 900 MHZ radio isn't range, but unreliable range. I have a 900 MHz ham repeater on the highest point in the state and in some places, and some times, the range is amazing. Other times, it is very disappointing. This has been the same way with 900 MHz simplex. Trees and mountains are bad. Open, line of sight is good. But even then, there are times it just doesn't work. 900 should be good aboard ship since it passes through openings lower frequencies won't. I have been playing recently with some dPMR radios. They even have encryption though I'm sure it would only deter casual listeners. There might be legal issues with these though. As mentioned, the good thing about a Nextel phone is that everyone thinks it is a cellphone and pays you no mind.

People are donating these things like crazy to Goodwill, too. They work great at ball games. I have donated a ton to Little League coaches. The great thing about old Nextel phones is they take standard chargers and you can toss the phone if you break it and not feel guilty.....

Is the SIM card new or used? Was the SIM card ever activated?

The phones were new in the box. Never activated. I did order a couple of used SIMs off eBay on the off chance that they might work. I did find some mention of doing a factory reset on them by entering ##786# but when I do that and it asks if I want to reset and I push "yes", nothing happens. I figure they are already in factory condition seeing that they haven't been used or activated. I also saw where someone said to go to the Sprint store and they would take it off. I kind of doubt that would be the case now.

I just checked and they are the same folks. If yours don't do this, let me know. Also, if they do and you find out what to do about it, also let me know that.
Thanks

Will do. My package has been in limbo with the USPS for the past few days so I haven't gotten a chance to try them yet. I did order a different model as well, it should be here Tuesday. I did order a lot of used sims at a really good price so I can try them too. I'll let you know.

There is a site, byowireless.com where they offer prepaid for as low as $5 a month. So, I tried to activate one of mine there. They took my money and said it should activate, but it didn't. I think I can get my money back. There is a wireless store here that sells Sprint. My son says they are decent folks. I will find out probably tomorrow. As a last resort, I can get a month of Sprint prepaid and drop it after a month.

Just to confirm

So with a SIM card installed it is possible to get the ic502 doing Direct Talk without any sort of activation? Can the annoying chirp sound be disabled on this model?

That remains to be seen. I haven't had any luck so far. I haven't even gotten far enough for the chirp to be annoying.

The strange thing is Nextel branded phones could do "direct talk" while the identical Boost branded phone could not unless it was "unlocked" like you would unlock an ATT phone to work on T mobile. Boost never marketed direct talk as a feature of the phone.

These are strange phones indeed. If I put in another SIM, it just says that it is the wrong type and doesn't ask for an unlock code. Also, if I key in *#06# I don't get the IMEI. I don't get anything. Never seen this before. I thought about trying to "unlock" them but the folks offering this service want about $20 for it and they say that the phone should ask for the unlock code, which mine don't. I am going to the local Sprint store and have a heart to heart with them. I figure the worst that can happen is that I will be chased out.

OK, I received 2 Nextel 64K SIMS and 2 128K SIMS. I assumed these were used and had been activated at one point. Perhaps not. When I put them in the phone, I get the same "in Progress". Bummer.
