I don't know that Nextel name will go away. Nextel has a big following in public safety and business customers. Sprint is more of an individual name. There is no reason that they have to get rid of either name.

The last that I heard is that the official name will be "Sprint Nextel". But who know, until the deal is finalized.

Big day coming soon. Feb. 7, 2005 is the date that Nextel must advise the FCC if they are agreeing to the rebanding order or not.

Also on the same day, FEb.7, Southern Linc and Nextel must complete their agreements on band sharing in major markets.

Once a final approval date is established by the FCC, the clock starts ticking on rebanding. All rebanding must be completed for NPSPAC frequencies, those between 866 and 870 MHz and the Nextel/Cellular systems below 860 within 18 months. The remaining Public Safety and SMR system relocation must be completed within 36 month from the start date.

Actually Sprint/Nextel really doesn't have much choice but to agree to the rebanding deal. Heck they make money off it. As to Sprint/Nextel vs "the Linc", that could prove interesting....... Why would a competitor agree to be mutually bennificial to the "enemy"? WEG
**Hmmm future Verizon buying Linc deal to compete with Sprint/Nextel????**

Just something to ponder there.

Not likely.

Link is owned by a power company holding company.
It was created to support the communications needs of the Power Company subsidararies.

Yes, it has grown beyond that model, but companies drag along a lot of history when they make decisions.

Link is a regional system, and Nextel is a national system. So Link would bring very little to the consolidation.

Link and Nextel both have a pretty good idea what the FCC will rule if they don't reach agreement. It's like an insurance company settling a case out of court to save the lawyer and administrative costs. FCC said you reach an agreement or we will.
