Hi all, I have been out of the hobby for a while now ever since rebanding and encryption (I was a PD only listener).
I recently picked up a SDS100 and I’m slowly but surely getting my feet wet again, but I could really use come clarification on some things. All noob questions, I’m sure.
1. On the NJICS system, do I need to leave all the simulcast frequencies open? I live in Monmouth county, can I block all other simulcast freqs out except Monmouth or is it best to just leave them all alone.

2. Also on the NJCIS system, do the repeater sites only work in the county in which the departments are located? ie: if I want to monitor a department in Essex county, do I need to have the Essex county simulcast frequencies programmed? Or do I just need the TGs programmed and they will be broadcast over Monmouth County simulcast freqs.

3. It looks like some FDs and EMS departments are operating on their own frequencies (although still dispatched by the county). I would just need to program those separately from the rest of the TRS systems?

4. Are firegrounds still simplex? So I would have to be very close to them to monitor?

5. Are there EMS - to - hospital or to county communications? All I seem to be hearing is dispatch and that’s it, I feel like I am missing on-scene or transport transmissions. I do have the dispatch / tac / talk TGs open and unlocked. It just seems like I’m not hearing much of anything on those.

6. I can remember hearing medevacs communicating with the hospitals as well, giving vitals and updates, is that still done over the air? Is that done on a different frequency?

Thank you for the help, the days of manually entering channels on my pro-95 are long gone!!

I live in Monmouth county also. The only site I can receive is The Monmouth County site, so I have every other site disabled (I have other NJICS sites in a different program list when travelling)

If you are in the Essex county area, the West orange Site is the best best to receive the system, along with the Union County Site.

Some FD/EMS have their own channels seperate from the NJICS. You need to program those, also.
4. Are firegrounds still simplex? So I would have to be very close to them to monitor?
Yes, most are simplex, within line of sight....but some are on repeaters also.

EMS to Hospital are on various channels, try 155.28/155.34, plus the MED channels 462 to 463 area, in the database

Various ,,,,, Some on NJICS, JEMSTAR, NorthStar, SouthStar, and other Hospital Medivacs, on NJICS, and other Freqs, all in the Database

I use Uniden Sentinel for programming all over the country with my SDS100, and PC, works great!

Just to verify, will NJSP troop B be broadcast on the Monmouth simulcast site? Can I leave all sites avoided except Monmouth and hear all of the NJSP troops?

I’m asking because I have Troops ABC and toll roads programmed. I only have the Monmouth simulcast site unlocked, I can hear Troops A, C and toll roads but nothing from troop B.

I’m verifying by tuning into broadcastify’s live feed of troop B and there is plenty of activity on that but nothing on my scanner. Can’t figure out why?

I guess my question is, are all troops and TGs broadcast on all NJICS simulcast sites?

Monmouth County is covered by Troop C, so there wouldn't be much reason for Troop B traffic to be carried on that cell, unless a radio happens to affiliate. That would probably be fairly seldom.

Ok so not all troops and TGs are broadcast on all simulcast sites. As you can see I’m still trying to figure out how simulcast and all that works! Like you said, there is no point for northern troops to be broadcast on southern sites, I just wasn’t sure if it worked like that or if everything was on all sites.

I’ll start experimenting on which sites I can reach in order to capture troop B.

Thank you for the help!

Unlike the old 800 MHz NJSP system, the NJICS system is very efficient when it comes to channel resources. Talkgroups are only going to be carried at sites/cells where they are actually needed. With the old system you have three massive simulcast cells covering 1/3 of the state, and the Troop C simulcast often carried Troop B and A traffic as well. Not so much with the NJICS, especially since there are a lot more standalone sites and the simulcast cells span much smaller areas than the three old ones did.
