According to an article in the Grosse Pointe News the Michigan Criminal Justice Information System came out with a mandate that effective October 2026 all public safety land & mobile radios have to be encrypted. Somewhere I also saw a similar CJIS from the FBI mandating the same. I wonder what happens to the agencies that fail to meet the deadline. It was my understanding this was an unfunded mandate. I don't see a need for FD's to encrypt but I understand having an encrypted fireground channel for certain communications.

Wayne County simulcast won’t carry Oakland traffic unless Oakland radios are affiliated there. Neighbor sites don’t automatically repeat all traffic. Unlike Washtenaw and Livingston, Oakland units rarely affiliate with Wayne. There’s likely no site that fully passes all Oakland traffic. Improving Oakland simulcast reception is the best solution.Hi all,
I am just outside of Oakland County's closest tower site to my location so I have real trouble listening to the Fire traffic using the Oakland Simulcast sites. I noticed that the Oakland simulcast has several "site neighbors" such as the Wayne County simulcast site. When I switch to Wayne simulcast, I never hear any traffic from the Oakland county system. I am familiar with doing this as I use the Washtenaw County simulcast site to listen to Livingston County traffic since the Washtenaw site is a neighbor and carries all the Livingston County traffic on their site. I was hoping the Wayne County simulcast site did the same with Oakland County but it doesn't seem to be the case. Anyone know what site(s) will pass through all the Oakland County traffic in the same way? Maybe none of them do since it would put quite a load on the system sites but thought I'd ask around here.
Thanks for the help.
According to what someone posted on the Downriver database page here, Downriver is joining the state system.Although the following article doesn’t say anything about the entire state, it’s still another area being encrypted. My nephew lives in the Trenton area. On his commute to Warren this morning, radio station was discussing this issue. They were saying that the downriver area is to be encrypted by this July.
