It has been indicated that June 1 2026 is the target date for 100% NJSP Encryption, on all Talk Groups.

Some of the data related to this is available as reported by public sources:

"By June 1st, 2026, the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) and regional law enforcement will be operating on advanced, highly encrypted radio systems tailored specifically for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, utilizing mandated, interoperable equipment for secure communication at venues like MetLife Stadium.

Key Aspects of the Radio System and Security:
Mandated Encryption: FIFA mandates specialized, interoperable radio equipment to ensure secure, uninterrupted communication between local, state, and federal agencies.

High-Cost Upgrades: As of April 2026, municipalities like Jersey City are acquiring expensive (approx. $9,000 per unit) Motorola radios to comply with these security requirements for the 2026 World Cup detail.

Interoperability: The systems must allow for direct, secure communication between NJSP, local police, and federal partners during the World Cup, ensuring a unified security response.

Training Exercises: NJSP has been conducting drills at MetLife Stadium throughout 2025 and early 2026 to test the security systems and interoperability of radio communications.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup involves 104 matches, with MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, hosting multiple matches, including the final on July 19, 2026. The security preparation involves extensive coordination with the White House Task Force and other federal, state, and local partners."

June 1st, 2026, NJSP Radio Encryption Security Context:

Operational Readiness: Troopers have been scheduled to work intensive shifts starting June 1, 2026, through July 23, 2026, for the duration of the tournament, with 600–1,000 officers daily.

Encryption Mandate: High-priced Motorola radios, costing nearly $9,000 each, have been mandated by FIFA for police to use during the tournament.

Secure Communication: These encrypted systems allow interoperability among federal, state, and local agencies to prevent unauthorized monitoring of security efforts around MetLife Stadium.

Radio & Tech Systems
Secure Infrastructure: The NJSP is utilizing a "single operating system" that allows all partner agencies to share data across encrypted channels, replacing old paper systems with digital, real-time intelligence.

Jobs4Blue System: The NJSP is using a specialized platform (Jobs4Blue) for secured communication, officer scheduling, and real-time incident updates.

Unified Command: An International Police Cooperation Center is supporting NJSP, integrating intelligence directly into encrypted transit and officer networks.

The first match in New Jersey is not until June 13, 2026, but the tightened security and encrypted communication protocols will be in place by June 1 to manage team arrivals and site security.

It's getting to the point that news of agencies going E is as shocking as a headline proclaiming "Sun rises in the east today, will set in the west!!!"

I listened to the NJSP on and off for at least 20 years. It was the first agency I programmed into my first trunking scanner, a BC-780XLT. Most of the comms were routine traffic stops. After a while, it was easy to lose interest. Hate to see them go E, but speaking for myself, I will not miss listening to them. Maritime and civ / mil air is where it's at these days for me.
I will. Handy to find out what’s causing traffic on GSP, 78, etc when I’m commuting on those roads.

Why does it matter? How does knowing its cause affect your commute at all? It doesn't.

Waze and Google Maps have this handy thing where it shows you not only whats going on, but where in your commute and what detours to take. No need to buy a $500 scanner. Hope this helps.

I get it though i like listening to the scanner. For one thing Waze and Google only get reported after the fact by users in traffic. Emergency services is being dispatched in real time. Maps will show that there's a crash but not usually more info. If you hear that FD is going for a tractor trailer on it's side across all lanes, you know that's not clearing soon. If it's something minor you may just sit in the few minutes of traffic.

Why do you, a not involved commuter, need to know in real time what exactly is going on on the GSP/78/etc?

Again, as a commuter, all you need to know is there's an incident and to plan alternate route. The exact specifics are a nice to have, not a need to have and don't affect your commute whatsoever.

For me I drive from Southern NJ to NYC 3-4x a week and it's been very helpful. I've ran into a few cars that have been called out by dispatch and I called to update the location. I even ran into two that were clearly drunk drivers that I had stopped and arrested. They could have killed someone with the way that they were driving.

I second that. I use I-295 daily, and often 42, 55, AC Expressway, and there have definitely been times when you hear a Signal 11 go out with information on what lanes are blocked right before you get up to it and certainly before Waze picks it up or the County dispatches Fire/EMS. They also seem to get called a bit before the NJDOT Safety Service Patrol. So if I hear over the NJSP there's a car blocking the left lane around that next curve where I can't see it, it's good to know to get to the right. This happens often enough I consider having these channels just one more tool to help me safely get to where I am going, and not having them make me feel just a little less safe. If I want to be nosy, then I have County Fire/EMS. I only care about the NJSP channels when I'm on those roads.

I find that the information from 511NJ.org gets updated much quicker than Google Maps and it gets sent directly to your phone via SMS.
Waze OTOH you have to wait for another commuter to post the incident.
