If you have an Android based smart phone get the free app called Simple Weather Alert. Most times my phone goes off before my weather radio does!

You can set a ringtone for the alert and it has its own independent volume control, settable mute times if you don't want it going off at night, it can be set to alert by county or by location of the phone if you have GPS turned on, very handy when traveling or just working over a large area.

I got a mp3 file made up of the Minitor pager alert tone and put that on as my weather alert, very effective in noisy locations.

You could buy an advanced WX radio that does all the decoding of every type of message, pipe into a computer and have it record the audio on an alert and then have it emailed. Not a text, but something that might work.

Neither of those last few options can do the boundaries he asked for.

WX Alert

Try WX Alert USA for the iPhone. I think it'll do all you're asking . . . assuming you have an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Weather Alert USA

Ah, sorry, not SMS though.

No, neither of those can be filtered by polygon boundaries as he is asking for.

The NWS does have a new system in place that does exactly what you want. Right now though it is solely for persons that require such information and not the general public.

InteractiveNWS

So if you qualify you may be able to sign up.

Do Races/Ares members apply?

I realize they can get through, but I wouldn't advertise that publicly... There is a large Weather firm who considers themselves very Accurate that is strongly against iNWS in the first place since it is stealing business from the private sector. If they find out that people outside of the intended audience are using it, they will make noise in Congress again. And the outcome won't be good for those who use it :)

wunderground.com has a free app that you can set about 20 notifications settings based on what city or cities you choose. I use it on an iPhone and it works great and is very timely.

This does not work the way the OP requires
