Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC

...COMPUTER SYSTEM UPGRADE FOR NWS BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON JUNE 10TH
THROUGH 12TH...
National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington Weather Forecast
Office (NWS LWX) will be conducting a required, scheduled update
to their Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS)
computer system. NWS offices use AWIPS to display and integrate
weather and water information, and to send life-saving
information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public.
AWIPS is updated periodically, but this update is comprehensive
and requires that the system be taken completely offline for
approximately two days, from the morning of Tuesday, June 10th to
late Thursday, June 12th. During that time, NWS LWX forecasters will
produce and disseminate products for the Mid-Atlantic region using
the AWIPS system at one of our backup offices in NWS State
College, PA. Routine forecasts and any needed watches, warnings,
or advisories will be issued as normal.
A few of our services will be impacted as they originate only from
AWIPS facilities at NWS LWX, namely:
* Climate: Data will not be updated from Tuesday afternoon, June
10th through Thursday, June 12th.
* NOAA Weather Radio Transmitters: The following NOAA Weather
Radio transmitters programmed by NWS LWX will be off the air
during most of the AWIPS update:
KHB-36 Manassas, VA
KEC-83 Pikesville, MD
WXM-42 Hagerstown, MD
WXM-73 Moorefield, WV
WZ-2527 Fredericksburg, VA
WXM-43 Frostburg, MD
KZZ-28 Covesville, VA
WNG-736 Washington, DC
* Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook images normally at
www.weather.gov/erh/ghwo?wfo=lwx
* Some of the combined summaries of hourly observations, weather
roundups, will not be available:
Current Hourly Weather Observations
NWS LWX will remain operational and staffed while AWIPS is
offline, taking public and partner phone calls, communicating via
social media, and performing other functions that can be completed
without AWIPS.
