At 72, I still take walks in the Tall Pines Management Area above Cleveland SC. The local NOAA station alerts are retransmitted on the 147.135 Skywarn repeater so I know if I'm going to get blasted by a pop up thunderstorm. Yes, there is no where to shelter up there other than making a hasty retreat to your car.

Good luck on the DXing. When they did DFW (and many other offices) there was just a recorded loop saying "This NOAA weather radio station is off the air.", like we need that announcement to figure it out.
We in the hobby don't need it. But, the average joe with a home WX receiver might tune in and hear nothing, or just the open carrier, and think his/her receiver has bit the dust. ;)

We had a NOAA TX at one of our transmitter sites in the 90s. Thing would go south and would be Ota for a week before a tech would come out to repair. They were short handed then. Probably gonna get worse.

Yes, some are dumb as a box of rocks. A recorded message is needed for those with a FSIQ lower than 80.

At least they waited for most schools to be done for the year (except for ESY (Extended School Year)), the last day of school I was quizzing a front office lady about their Midland receiver for NOAA alerts (if during an alert it goes to full volume regardless of the volume setting). Kind of important for them.

Additional . . . last night, during the Radio Monitoring Net -- The Radio Monitoring Net -- one of the participants said a really bright thing: when your local NOAA weather radio is off the air for updates, that's a time when you might try to DX some distant NWS weather radio stations. I plan to give it a try.

Boxes of rocks notwithstanding, the message lets you know the lack of weather information isn't because your radio is malfunctiono_O

Exactly. The audience for these broadcasts is not limited to radio enthusiasts. All joking aside, not sure why some do not seem to understand this. Consider someone needing timely weather info during an outbreak of bad weather - immediately he/she knows to seek other sources thanks to the message.

Totally serious question: Did any of you, or anyone you know, hear about this on TV? I didn't here in DFW, but I saw a few FB posts announcing it. That's what I've been reading from other areas as well.

Kind of makes me wonder exactly how important and critical the All Hazards Radio is really considered these days.

When the stations controlled by the Indianapolis NWSFO were being upgraded, I'm pretty sure I heard local TV station weather guys letting people know and using it as an opportunity to plug their own push news/weather app.

I've heard the heat alerts. On another loop, I wonder what it means when there is a loop of "the current time is xx:xx eastern daylight time" at least it does update that time every minute

We're getting a lot of weather in the northeast and Manhattan is transmitting the "this weather station is temporarily off the air" message
