I have recently purchased a NooElec R820T and was wondering if any programs/software existed to use this like a regular Uniden or Radio Shack scanner?

While there are scanner plugins, there are none I'm aware of that can be programmed with different CTCSS/CDCSS/NAC on different frequencies like you can with a scanner.

There are also performance limitations with the RTL dongles.

The short answer is definitely NOT, at least not for conventional frequencies. There is no SDR program(s) which allows you to scan through a pre-programmed list of, say, 1000 conventional frequencies and their associated PL/DPL/NAC codes, like I do all the time with my 396XT. It seems like it should be relatively easy to build, and I was quite surprised to learn that nobody programmed it already. But, AFAIK it doesn't exist.

Don't throw away those hardware scanners any time soon...

The plugin will work just fine for the applications I would use it for. Surprised no one has made such a program yet,

SDR# with certain plugins will do most of that. The only thing it won't is the NAC filtering.

I agree though on the all in one program. I'm surprised nobody has tried emulating a full featured trunking radio in software. If I had the coding skills it would be my primary goal.

Please post a link to the plugin that will do different CTCSS/CDCSS per frequency.

For the trunking, Unitrunker does it.

You can get all the plug-ins from the Russian site off the sdr# site. There is even an auto update file that loads them all for you. I did install them but haven't had much time to play. Hope that helps.
