I live about 20 miles away from North Manchester in Wabash County Indiana. If I have my pro-106 scanner within a mile of the town, I can hear them perfectly. If I get much farther than that away, I lose them. I am curious if somebody more knowledgeable than me, can tell me if just using a better antenna for the 150 MHz range would allow me to hear them, as I currently use a rubber duck 800 MHz antenna, or if I am just out of luck due to the distance. I attached the RR link to Wabash County.

Thanks!

Which freq are you receiving them on? I thought they were using NXDN, and/or SAFE-T.

They went away from NXDN a while back and they do use SAFE-T some, but primarily this channel now.

I was just looking at that, and also noticed their NXDN stuff was gone.

Wabash Co Shf is on SAFE-T full time, I believe. Idk why NMPD wouldn't follow them to SAFE-T, since they both were NFM, then NXDN, and then changed again.

Safe-T works great in some areas of Wabash County, but not others especially in the northern part of the county where North Manchester is. I think its a tower issue. This frequency is a more reliable one for them to RX and TX. I just don't know why I have to be so close to town to receive their radio traffic. It's not like that with the other 150 MHz traffic in the county.

It must be a terrain issue. The Claypool tower would accept Wabash TGs.

Idk why you can't hear that VHF freq. Wabash Co Disp apparently can hear it, in Wabash. Dispatch has a transmitter for the NMPD repeater; and that repeater is licensed for 276 watts. 276 watts seems odd to me, to cover a small town. A 20 watt repeater should cover that town.

I am by no means an expert. I did read that talk groups are granted permissions to use only certain towers so that the towers aren’t getting bogged down by an extremely large amount of talk groups. Some talk groups like the state police or other agencies that cover multiple counties are granted permission to use multiple towers. I honestly don’t know if talk groups are only permitted generally to use towers located within their county or if it is common practice that they also use surrounding county towers
