I have a Bearcat Uniden Trunktracker IV 796D scanner. Can I get PFD and NPFD on mine? Thanks.

Yes If its a 9600baud scanner you should be able to. The only problems you may have with it is when rebanding takes place. Im not sure if there is a firmware update for that scanner that supports the rebanding. Check on the Uniden website to find out but for now you should be able to hear NPFD&PFD ok.

From the owner's manual, I'd say yes. Refer to page 51 for the APCO 25 type.

Rhode Island Statewide Communications Network (RISCON) Trunking System, Statewide, Rhode Island - Scanner Frequencies
PFD: Channels 866.08750 866.61250 867.42500 867.63750 868.03750 868.15000 868.27500a 868.71250, with the last one being the control channel, most important to have that.

Talkgroup 10101 for dispatch, 10107 for fireground 1.

NPFD: Channels 866.48750 866.85000 867.40000a 867.67500 868.51250, with the last one being the control channel, most important to have that.

Talkgroup 1547 for dispatch, 1548 for fireground.

Digital scanners

Follow the $$;
digital scanners cost about $500.00.
They receive all previous modes also.
The Uniden models only require the control channels to be entered, then the Talk Group ID's pop up and you can hit "ENTER" to store the info.
Eventually you will have all the Talk Groups and you can sort them into Groups for FD, PD, EMS, etc.
Then you can pick & choose which to scan & which to lock out (like the dog catcher & the school buses).
Good Luck.

Last 2 nights, have not heard a single transmission from the scanner from PFD or NPFD. Conventional VHF and UHF channels from 30 miles away are fine. So it's all or nothing with digital - if the signal is marginal, it fails completely.

Keep in mind the wavelength at 868MHz is about 13". Thus there will be a peak or a null about every 3.25". I suggest you move your scanner SLOWLY around the room, right and left, up and down - maybe every room - and note where you receive it best, then leave the scanner there.

I just picked up a used Radio Shack Pro-2096 digital trunking scanner but all I can get when I put in the frequencies for NPFD is static. Does this mean it won't work?

How are you programming it? I'd recommend software based programming, but if you're doing it by hand, I'd recommend downloading the manual and making sure everyhting"s entered correctly.

In addition to the frequencies, you have to ensure that it's in the correct mode (MO) and that you have entered the talkgroups to scan.

My son went thru the manual and kept putting the numbers in but like I said all we get is something that almost sounds like a squelch. I have been on line looking to see what I could do and I came across Starrsoft Win96 and am thinking of taking a ride to Radio Shack and buying the UBS to scanner cable and downloading this program to make it easier. I have finally found the frequencies and talk groups to North Providence and Providence so all I should need is to plug in the numbers.
