To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently purchased a NX-220K but have run into problems. Fully charged and turned it on, the radio makes a steady tone & the LED flashes red and orange. Haven't been able to find a cause for that. Also tried programming but when I try to write data to the radio, I get an error message stating "Unit ID (Own). ANy thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Did you buy this radio from a Kenwood Dealer? It sounds like it has no programming and you may be having programming errors. Unit ID OWN may mean you are trying to talk to your self but I am not sure as I have yet to program a NX-???? yet.

Sounds like it's been "stunned" via the NXDN mode.
What was the source of this radio?
What happens when you try to connect to it with the KPG software?

I purchased from someone in NC, everything was new in box. Not sure if he's a Kenwood dealer though. When I connect the cable and use the software, it appears to be OK. It can read data from transceiver and the transceiver information OK .

*EDIT-I fixed it by opening the NXDN menu and giving it a random Unit ID number. Now I will have to wait and see if it picks up anything though!

Try building a new file for it, from scratch, see if that fixes it. Don't read the existing one and try and modify it. Start from zero and go from there.

Usually an un-programmed radio will show "UNPROGRAMMED" on the display when they are brand new. If it's showing something else, it's been programmed by someone.

It has no display but I think it programed finally. How to I determine if the NXDN channels are narrow or very narrow? I hit the button for squelch on all the NXDN channels and don't hear anything.

OK, non-display model, got it. Maybe it was just un-programmed as Budd said.
When you program it, it'll give you an option for the individual NXDN channels. You'll have to select NXDN for each channel (as opposed to Analog) and then it'll give you the option of:
NXDN Narrow = 12.5KHz
NXDN Very Narrow = 6.25KHz

It will not work that way. It is not like analog and the monitor button makes it hear.
#1 You need all the proper channel information.
#2 Are you trying to make a scanner or are you trying to program a radio to talk on this system?

Yeah, exactly.
Pressing the "monitor" button (if it's been programmed) to do that on NXDN mode will only remove the RAN code filtering from the RX side. You won't hear any static like you would in analog mode. The radio, in NXDN mode, will only pass decoded audio to the speaker. If there is no NXDN traffic there you won't hear anything. The LED on top should light up though.

Many thanks!! Think I've got it figured it now.
