Not sure if this has been on anyone's radar, as it was recently introduced. I have not seen anything mentioned in the forums.

Legislation has been introduced in the New York City Council to regulate the encryption of NYPD radio communications. Should this become law, it would require all credentialed media outlets in NYC and various emergency agencies to have real-time access to NYPD encrypted communications.

The NYPD would need to have a written policy in place regarding encryption.

One of the great things proposed in this legislation is that it will also reopen coms to the general public with a 10-minute delay. I think many of us would have no issue with such a small time delay if that is what it will take to put channels back into the open.

The bill is currently laid over in committee. This means the Public Safety Committee has not taken immediate action after yesterday's hearing. Later, I am going to try and watch any video available from yesterday's hearing to see what was discussed. If someone has already watched the Public Safety meeting from yesterday and can report on it, please do.

However, hopefully, there is some positive movement on this. I think the Council hearing from us in support of this bill would be beneficial as well.

The proposed legislation is linked below:

Boston PD did this without the media and the council. NYPD plays by their own rules unless Mamdani pushes for it. I really doubt it'll come to fruition
