Each frequency, other than the City Wides, is specific to a ceratin area. So, what frequency are you referring to? And the answer is generally the target coverage area.

Coverage will be frequency specific, even on the wide area frequecies, each frequency generally has different base station sites. Coverage will logically be designed to the priorities of the intended use. SOD and Highway have different sites and their critical portable coverage needs are obviously different.

Received, thank you both. Was wondering if the digital system would have greater range, and if so, how far omnidirectionally. I guess the only way to know would be to test it, or if someone knowledgeable of the site locations and hardware chimed in.

Back to your original question about coverage in NJ. Each frequency is designed to enhance coverage in specific areas of NYC so any change in NJ is likely to be for the worse unless there is a reason for enhancement in that direcction.

I'm only 5 miles south west of Manhattan - signal strengths from the Manhattan, Brooklyn pcts seem about the same as the old analog systems. I might be too close for my results to matter, though.

From what I can tell, Zone 3 (10th & 13th Precincts), Zone 6 (20th, Central Park & 24th Precincts) and Zone 8 (26th & 30th Precincts) have switched to their respective P25 channels. I can't confirm if the 6th & 9th Precinct channel has transitioned as well, but that is likely just a matter of time.

Thank you for the update. Yep, that's that. The end of an era. Still plenty in the NYC metro area to monitor, though.
I like your attitude. Yes, it’s too bad, but there’s no point in getting upset about it. There is indeed a ton to monitor otherwise. I am glad, though, that I had the opportunity to monitor the NYPD on a daily basis from when I was a teen living in Manhattan in the 1970s until I moved away from NYC in 2012 (and would always do some monitoring when I would stay for a visit with my family after that).

- Let's change course slightly and stop being bad winners.
Does anyone have any insight as to what happens to all of the Vertex VX-P949's, given the number of keys limitation (48) similar to the APX900?
As far as i understand, No MOS should have it in their possession except for Traffic and School Safety, Possibly detectives, But all Vertex VX-P949 should have been switched to the APX Next radios so they can fit all the encryption keys needed on the radios.

Thank you for the insight. Just as I thought, the Vertex P949's are being passed down to School Safety, Auxiliary and Traffic. Last I knew, Detectives and higher bosses were on VX-P824's; is that changing so that they're using the VX-P949's (likely with custom codeplugs based on role) instead?

So from what i understand allegedly School Safety is also going to get the APX Next radios within these couple of years which doesn't make sense but whatever.
Not sure exactly how all departments eventually having APX NEXT is going to work.... But i think plain clothes cops like Vandals Squad (Transit Borough) and certain cops that need small, lightweight radios will keep the radios they were assigned especially since there's no radio out there on the market that is as small, lightweight and easy to conceal as the VX-P824s.
Higher ranking Detectives, and bosses should also have been issued the APX NEXT especially since its all bands, which would be useful for the bosses to communicate with other agencies if need be.
Also apparently the rest of the Vertex vx-p949s that are not being used are getting sold/given to other agencies either in the city or possibly other states.
