I recently noticed that the Milwaukee Fire Dept added a bunch of new talkgroups on the Oasis system. There are over 80 talks groups for them now. This seems like an unusual amount of talkgroups. Does anyone have any insight into the unusually large number of talkgroups for them? I know the city just awarded a new contract to Harris for a new radio system.

I can’t help but to wonder if this is related to the build out of a new system.

These are ISSI linked talkgroups between OASIS and the Milwaukee Opensky system.

Some are full-time patched and some are "on-demand" for specific events or incidents at MFD dispatcher discretion and based on procedural protocols. Just because a talkgroup is listed doesn't mean it is used on a daily basis.

Possibly related to the new Milwaukee P-25 Phase II system constructed by Harris but haven't heard any plan on MFD transitioning to OASIS.

Driving force on these ISSI linked talkgroups is interoperability while responding to Shared Service calls between Milwaukee and the adjacent jurisdictions in Milwaukee County (Wauwatosa, West Allis, North Shore just to name a few).

Another driver is event planning, especially given the upcoming 2024 Republican National Convention.

And as Opensky is now "end of life" technology, system redundancy is always a good thing.

High level, this is pretty accurate. These talkgroups went live on OASIS for the first time about 2 years ago, with most OASIS users receiving their reprogramming within the last year.

ISSI is not intended or designed to operate as a redundancy for OASIS or Opensky. This is the linking of two dis-similar systems and mapping the audio to the appropriate talkgroup numbers on either side.

Thanks for shedding light on this. It now makes sense. I’ll have to put all of these talkgroups in my scanners and see what comes up.

FYI…

Dane County, WI and Madison, WI share a similar ISSI based link for their two systems as well as the state WISCOM system.

OASIS is also linked to the state WISCOM system with some talkgroups as well.
