Hello...I'll be heading down to OBX for our yearly summer vacation. This will be my 15th year but my 1st year with a scanner so I'm looking for some good local info.

First off I'm WAY up in Corolla, almost ot the end of the paved road.

Second I've done my homework and already put in the Currituck and Dare county frequencies as well as searched every thread and their associated links for the outer banks. I've even put in the FRS/GMRS frequencies for fun.

I'm looking for anything interesting to listen to.
MOST IMPORTANT I'd love to tune into the Corolla area life guards and beach patrol, just to know what is going on. Anyone know what they use?

After that and good police/fire/EMS stuff, anything with the coast guard or other military activity in the area. I did search and find some basic Coast Giard freqs. but I'm sure someone with local knowledge can fill in the gaps.

Anyone with some good local info on the Corolla area???

The Corolla lifeguards used to use 154.385 & 154.355 when I worked down there back in 1995. Of course county rescue 155.055 is also busy up there.

Thanks. I'll add that one (154.385). The other two were in the database but I'm glad you can confirm the activity on them.

I was down there in 2002 and all I heard was the marine traffic. Even that was very scarce it's rumored the PDS use MDTs exclusively. Didn't even hear a single fire or medical dispatch! Things must have changed since then!

If you have the right frequencies programmed in, the outer banks is hopping with activity. VHF Marine is always busy, during the"tourist" season the lifeguard channels (461.95 UHF Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills & 158.82 vhf) are very busy along with 155.280 rescue dispatch. Police frequencies are busy also though much of Dare county sheriff's traffic is DES encrypted. Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head & Kitty Hawk law enforcement use multiple uHF frequencis not listed on the database. Try just scanning between 460.0--460.65. Enjoy!

I suspect there should be a lot of activity in tourist season.....I'm trying to get as many freqs. in so I can spend my time listening rather than searching.

So what is PDS and MDT?

I'll add the 461.95---didn't have that one listed anywhere.

The police departments such as Southern Shores, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk use one frequency for dispatch between the departments since somethimes they back each other up. Since you will be staying close to the VA line where I normally stay what you hear out of Dare County is sometimes limited until you get back south. I have been able to pick up VA Beach's system and others in the Tidewater area. Marine channels usually are active as stated above.

I did check the VA stuff but I thought it was probably too far away. Are the Marine frequencies in the Wiki? I think I put in the Coast Guard stuff but I'm not sure what else I should have. Any suggestions?

My family and I go down there at least TWICE a year. Can hear Va State Police Ch 9 & 10 also Va Beach EMS 155.175. Currituck also uses channel 15 on the Va Beach TRS to contact Va Beach. Dare Central is always busy while we are down there. Dare Medflight makes alot of trips to Norfolk Gen. & Cheas. Gen

Fuzzy - the link you gave is to the conventional channel page.

The link to the VAB trunked system is above the conventional frequency information.

At one time, VAB was still maintaining their fire dispatch on both UHF (460.575 ?) and on the trunked system. Although it is no longer in the RR database, the channel and a couple of other conventional fire channels are still licensed to the city.
