Got it. I'll add those in.

I'm very excited to potentially hear some of the marine/coast guard and military air stuff (since neither come in where I live). I think I have marine/coast guard channels in.

Any suggestions for Military air or anything else I may find in OBX outside local fire/police/lifeguards/public works/Coast Guard???

What else is down there?

At one time, VAB was still maintaining their fire dispatch on both UHF (460.575 ?) and on the trunked system. Although it is no longer in the RR database, the channel and a couple of other conventional fire channels are still licensed to the city.

I have not heard traffic on any of the VBFD 460 freqs since the migration to trunked. Dispatch is still heard on 155.175.

Fuzzy, Corolla is only about 10 miles from the Virginia Beach city limits (VA/NC line); you should pick up the trunk system well enough to make it worthwhile. Make sure you enter the Motorola Smartnet system; the APCO 25 system is under construction

Hello...I'll be heading down to OBX for our yearly summer vacation. This will be my 15th year but my 1st year with a scanner
What kind of radio are you taking? If you can hear milair, I always remember seeing a lot of the jets flying along the coast. And the Coast Guard has some milair activity around 380 MHz. Good luck and have fun!

Considering that Virginia Beach continues to maintain 18 licenses - covering 460.575, 460.600 and 460.625, I would presume that these frequencies still have a purpose in the city's communications plan.

The fact that the licenses are good through 2011, and were modified as recently as last July, adds credence to the assumption.

The fact that the licensees, which appear to be primarily fire station sites and are limited to 30 watt base operations*, may explain why you haven't heard any VAB traffic on the channel in Norfolk.

It's likely VAB doesn't use the frequencies on a daily basis, but possibly as a back-up to the trunked system, or during large scale events (severe weather, for instance).

Several of the 16 licenses are for use on Knotts Island, which is within yelling distance of Corolla. There are also a couple of additional licenses covering the "input" side of the UHF frequencies, along with 460.525 / 465.525. There are also 2 licenses covering fixed links on 465.575 and 465.525 (with a power limit of 180 watts ERP *).

Based on the uncertainty of how (and, yes, "if") VAB is using these channels, and from both a curiousity and safety sake, I would have the frequencies programmed in a scanner if I was visiting Corolla.

the 460 fire freq's are used by the Tech team sometimes, but have not been used for a long time, rumor has it they use them for training too

Hijacking the thread for a minute...

The wife and I are headed down towards Avon and Salvo next week. Outside of what's already in the DB and what's listed in this thread, does anyone have any good suggestions? I think we might ride the ferry over to Ocracoke and see what's happening there, too. :)

Do you mean frequency suggestions of vacation suggestions...?

Ha! I guess I was a little vague on that, huh? Frequency suggestions for the more remote areas of the Outer Banks. :)

So far everything I have is either from the databases on here or from this (and a few other) threads on here. Actually I'd probably have more vacation suggestions.

Well I'm back. I can't say there was any real entertaining monitoring.....mostly very quiet...a few sheriff and EMS calls, a little bit of Giantkiller, one or two coast guard comms and a ton of traffic from VA Beach. On the ride there was not much helpful info either.

Actually the best part or at least the most active part was FRS. On the ride down we heard people in cars (actually saw them), and down there we heard a ton of FRS on the beach...but that was about it.

I was hoping to hear more of the lifeguard chatter but they apparently don't talk too much.

I did buy the cheap $9 waterproof radio bag which worked great. I'll debate next year whether to take the radio down or not. It really wasn't terribly entertaining in the end and probably not worth the hassle of carrying it down.

Just read a post on the MilAirCommsChat yahoo group dated 8/19 that began like this:

Just back from Kitty Hawk, and I have a bigger list of hits than last
year. So... here goes the list, I'm sure someone can shed more light
on their usage. All were active with some aircraft.

I'm not going to actually post the information, but it is there if anyone wants it. I'm not sure if you can just sign up or if you have to list a reason and wait for the moderator, but there are about 30 freqs listed. The message site is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MilAirCommsChat/message/5721.
