• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The GMRS radio service can be licensed only for an adult individual and his or her immediate family members, including a spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws (47 CFR95.179). Unless all the members of the OEM and CERT groups are related or each member of those groups has their own license it would not meet the FCC licensing restrictions. A government agency or group cannot obtain a license (must be an individual).

FWIW, a lot of GMRS repeaters are named to sound official like the ones in your back yard. With the exception of a few CERT groups across the country, EM tends to have their own licensed frequencies in the Public Safety pool. In actuality, they're just a few people trying to sound important.

Fact: They have no exclusive claim to any GMRS frequency. The channels are open to all GMRS licensees. FCC rules are 100% clear on this.

Now it is also true that they don't have to let you use their repeater but, again, it does not mean you can not use the frequency, too.

There are some grandfathered business licensees on the GMRS frequencies. They do have a right to be there, but they do not have exclusivity either.

If the channels are that busy, usually the local users will put their heads together and figure out ways to play nice in the sand box. But, I will reiterate again: No one has exclusive rights to any GMRS channel.

You might do well to get yourself a copy of Part 95 and read it over carefully so that you understand your rights as well as the rights of other licensees.

Do not be intimidated by any "official" sounding local entity. If they try to sic the police on you, you should be prepared with Part 95, chapter and verse, to explain to the police how and why they are being manipulated into enforcing rules that they have no business being involved in. Only the FCC has jurisdiction over Part 95 frequencies and their use.

This is what they are listing thr repeaters as

I get the weekly update from mygmrs.com, too. If you look up the license associated with each of them, it's just another individual's name and address. No government, no business, just a guy.

Read Part 95 and do not be intimidated by "OEM Command" or any other label. It's all smoke. They have no more right to the channels than you do. The only thing they can control is use of their repeater. It is theirs and they can say who uses the repeater, but NOT the channel.
