RE: 396T Features

All of what I read about this possible new radio is great, however, it must have a total and complete backlit keyboard like the 250 and 296. That is my dismay with the 246T. As great as the 246T is, it is virtually impossible to operate this in the dark without having a totally backlit keyboard. I hope the powers at Uniden get the message and not put the 396T on the market in the "dark".

A SD slot would be handy so you could transfer systems in and out of memory. It would also be useful if the scanner could record audio to the SD card using the frequency/talkgroup information as the file name or somehow encoding it in the file.

I know you're really 'on' about the card slot, but let's look at Uniden's history. A LOT of the problems they've been having with the last two high end models can be attributed to the digital card slot; people having to reseat the card after it manages to lose connection. Do you really think we should promote such a weak point by making more of the same?

A permanent chip would be fine - similar to the V-folders. Granted, the card gives you unlimited capabilities (only limited by how many cards you buy), but cards or chips can get lost or broken, too. (especially lost with the size of them anymore)

I bought a camera a couple years ago. It broke. I wanted to buy a replacement. They NO LONGER MAKE any that take the same cards! So, I have a bunch of useless memory cards now. These cards are being outdated faster than any scanner ever has been.

That's not a technology feature I want to see in a scanner. I know my V-folders will be there as long as the scanner is there, and won't lose connection.

Hello,

A SD socket is off-the-self and designed for card insertion and removal. Uniden designed the digital card slot using a PCB connector that is not designed for alot of card insertions. The problems I heard about the digital card slot were due to a loose cable to the connector.

CompactFlash and MMC/SD have been out for years. Some camera makers decided to go with their own format and so you have menory sticks, XD, etc. If Uniden went with SD cards I doubt it would go away soon.

I find my PDA with a SD slot very useful. I can use the audio recorder in it to record CW IDs, take the card out, and put the audio file on the computer.

Anyone know what the specific band coverage will be? Will it include the 225-400 mil air band?

I just love it when folks break our "embargo" date on press releases. Well, since the info has been leaked, let me make it official a few days early. See the attached press release. No photo, yet (other than my avatar). When a photo is available it will likely show up first on the BCD396T Yahoo group.

I read the press release and the scanner looks impressive. I do have a couple of questions, though.

I'm assuming that Voyager is incorrect when he says that there will be a "pager screen". I seem to remember that intercepting pagers is not legal.

Second, will there be a mobile? I ask because of the comments about interoperability in the press release. Personally owned scanners are used by some public safety professionals (like me), but a mobile would be a much better choice. Portable units are much more likely to "walk" away on their own.

If it's like the BC246T, the "Pager Screen" refers to:

This setting determines whether the scanner
automatically ignores transmissions found during
searching or Close Call operation that are on common
paging system frequencies.

Per the BC246T Owner's Manual...

Regarding Fire Tone-Out:

Sorry. I'm going to have to keep some details under wraps until development catches up with the announcement. We've got a few months to discuss this before it hits, though.

Regarding Pager Screen: See the BC246T, SC230, BC92XLT, BC72XLT that all have this feature. It basically blocks common paging frequencies during search and Close Call(tm) RF Capture operation.

"Pager Screen" is already on the BC246T and is nothing more than a feature you turn on to block all the known nationwide frequencies for paging so that when you use Close Call or doing a search it doesn't stop on them unnecessarily.

LOL!

Three consecutive messages about what Pager Screen is.....

Surely people will get it by now

Start the timer to see how long it takes for someone else to ask!

Nobody has asked for Passport or Multi-net LTR tracking

Any chance that this could happen :?:

If it wasn't in the press release, I'd have to say it's not coming.

But why doesn't someone ask for ProVoice while we're at it?

No, there are no licensees for MultiNet besides EF Johnson. The last time I saw a list of Passport licensees, Uniden was not on it.
