Has anyone tried using the Garmin GPS III with the 996? I've got one, and I don't want to spend the $37.00 for a cable if it's not compatible.

Thanks!

Does it have NMEA output? If so, it should work if it has a 9 pin DB-9 connector at the other end of your Garmin cable.

It means it is scanning up (also searching up).

You can rotate the VFO knob (I think, I don't have one) to change the direction to scanning down.

In GPS mode it's a direction, as in North, South, East, West.

I wasn't sure the GPS manual says it's NMEA 0183 version 2.0 and supports GPGGA, GPGLL, GPGSA, GPGSV, GPRMB, GPRMC, GPRTE, GPWPL, and GPBOD. That is a version earlier that the 996 manual says it needs, and the sentences are different as well.

Great radio!!!

so far working fine with my Garmiin Etrrex vista with the latest firmware / software updates.

Only issue is the many Talkgroups for the MI SP system. Add in the DNR / Local PD's and Detroit preceints and youo hit the 250 limit

I was wondering the same thing, (about the GPS versions, and sentances not matching.)
I have the GPSIII+, Anyone tried it?

Don't add ones that aren't use by your tower.

Is this the best scanner you have ever used or what? Whenever I am bored I think of a new way to program something I didn't think of before that would make scanning more enjoyable

How long before we see a Remote-Head for the BCD996T? Looking inside, it doesn't look like it would be too big of a project.

1. Manual programming is greatly enhanced by the "New..." menu item. Instead of backing out a step or two, scroll to New... and add another (frequency, TG, etc.). That's way good.

2. Wall wart doesn't get as warm or hot as my 796s do.

3. Receives "way better." Stock telescope picks up better than the 796s connected to the outside antennas. When the 996 is on the outside antenna, 5 bars!

4. Audio can be turned up louder, and it just 'sounds better.' (Could be an impact from its receiver too, not just the speaker - if it's even changed or different than the 796s'.)

Personal preference only on this one - cannot wait for ARC software to be out!

edit : Additional(s)

5. No slightly heard 'click' when it goes from one system to another (like my 796s).

And one question - does it aid the scanner in the GPS menu at 'Range' to set a mileage range when a GPS unit is not being used, or does it not matter at all ??

still have to trim... .I live near Port Hurron so I want these. Work in Detroit so I want those. DPD has way way too many groups with all the preceints and abot 20 detective ones.

May just add a second system with the detroit tower and those talk groups in it.

UASD killing trunked systems

I'm doing a lot of editting (about 10K channels in 175 systems), and I've come across a glitch in UASD that I can't track down. Occasionally, when I change something about a trunked system's sites, it dumps all of the sites, changes their type to a different type code, etc. Once, it simply deleted all my sites (from my OH/MARCS system). Today, it changed the type code on a site from EDW to EDC. It seems to happen when I go back into an existing system and change one of the sites' Quickkey or Startup Keys, but I've done that a lot, so maybe it's just probability.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Paul,
Does dormant mean that if GPS is turned on it will still receive everything - or will receive nothing?
Thanks,
Bob

Make two systems then. You can't get Detroit in PHN, and vice versa. So you make one PHN system with their towers, and one Detroit with 701 towers.

It means that the systems' lockout status will be unaffected by the setting. If the system is unlocked it will be scanned.

I've been out of touch with scanner innovation until today! Lost my brother in January and just lost interest in state-of-the-art. I had my pro 97 on all along, as I took care of matters. I forgot many of these forums and without my brother's "late & great" motivation/insistance (that I miss so much), I fell out of the loop.

Now it comes as a nice surprise that this new scanner exists! This is a first in many years for me, as I used to pour over the scanner forums, keeping up with announcements and watching the launch of new scanners well in advance. Reading .pdf manuals for scanners that weren't even available yet (you're familiar!).

This is such a treat. Becoming aware of the 996t "after the fact." No anticipation. It's available! No rush. No pre-conceptions. What a welcome relief. Am I repeating myself?

I've never owned a digital scanner but this one is going to provide me a new and welcome education and experience. I think the 246T was the last I read about digital scanners. I know, FOR SHAME!

I've been through the first couple of pages of this thread and Scott's candid and superb review was a breath of fresh air. Not to put him on the spot, all the posts just by their nature, are great! I was always there during the pregnancies in the past! Now it's like coming home AFTER the baby's born. ;)

Back to page... 4?

Thanks everybody for all the information! I'll catch-up to current before I submit any questions.

Andy
