You won't be sorry with the 246. That being said, you might want to wait a couple of days and see what product Uniden unveils on 9/30.

To answer your questions: Yes, you can set aside certain channels and scan just them. In the 246 you have "systems" (think banks) that contain "groups" (think channels).

Take a peek at the 246 manual (you can download from Uniden's web site) and see what you think. Also scroll waaay back in the 246 thread postings to see things explained.

Once you catch on to the idea that there are no channels by number, but instead by system & group, you'll get the hang of it.

Also, the Butel or Uniden software is certainly very helpful when programming the 246.

As far as the speed, Uniden's offerings are about as fast as you can get. The 246 is no exception. Both scan and search speeds are quick. For real specifics see the manual.
