Traveling the Turner Turnpike today I discovered an OHP Speed trap @ westbound MM 186, the Milfay Road overpass. As I approached the area I noticed headlight flashes from Eastbound traffic, then I got a strong hit on KA radar. Looking all over for the source I discovered a blind had been erected on the overpass. As I got closer I could see a Trooper standing in the blind with the radar gun pointed out of it. within a half mile or so units were set-up to pursue offenders with 3 units already having customers. As I returned Eastbound later I encountered an OHP unit entering Eastbound from the Stroud interchange and proceeding to just short of the overpass before turning onto a dirt road that lead up the side of the hill to the overpass, then across the overpass and down another dirt road to the Eastbound side of the road to get ready for the next victim. The screen shot from my dash cam shows the blind set-up just to the left of the sign, not a real close up shot, I heard nothing for radio traffic as I went through the area either on Turner 1 or 2 ID's, the 800 OHP Direct freq or the "Lowbands" but I need to poll my scanner to see if the OKWIN settings are correct as I never heard any Turner Traffic but was hearing Troop B on the Bristow site. The overpass is just about 3 miles or so East of the Main Toll Plaza.

Until I get time to poll my radio set-up to see if something is a miss, the question would be how the shooter was communicating with the chase units, surely not by MDT'S?

Could be the MDTs and/or some type of email. Some of the newer radar units allow the recording of the image and readings to provide proof that it was that black trans am doing 80, not the blue VW nearby. These images are saved as evidence and may be sent to the issuing officers along with the details for them to package up as evidence for the ticket they write. Often times no verbal communication is necessary if the officers are practiced in the procedure, just a still from the video with the speed, location, timestamp, and close up of the vehicle (with license plate visible) involved.

I would think that MDT/email would be too slow for the task at hand. I will have to look at the VTAC channels as I don't have them programmed at this time. I am also noticing that I am not seeing much if any traffic on Turner 1 42128, is anybody else having this issue?

Checking my radio, Turner 1 was on but for the Tulsa tower, All troop A and Turner ID's were locked out on the other sites. So they could have been using Turner 2 and I didn't know it. I went into ID Search but since it was locked out in the set-up it wouldn't show up on a search.

If nothing else, Freqed, you've at least settled the question in my mind about that blind -- cool dash cam photo!!

They talk on simplex VHF for these types of operations. Trooper running the laser calls our speeds, description to the troopers waiting at the on ramps.

Unless you are very close and tuned to the car to car simplex, you wont hear anything.

During an operation like this they also dont call each traffic stop into dispatch because there is so much back up there....they just enter it onto the MDT's like normal.

More than likely 44.7 MHz. It is used around here on a daily basis.

I had those Freq's active, was only locked out of OKWIN system Troop A and Turner ID's. Also had the OHP Direct 800 freq active which is what they use around NE OK. It's the pitfall of having one GPS Scanner set-up and one not. I love the 996XT because you can set sites and Talkgroups on GPS activation while the 996T only does sites. I already ordered the GARMIN puck and will apply the GPS settings to the 996T when I install the puck.

I'm sure Close Call or Signal Stalker would have hit on the frequency used. I have seen similar operations in Georgia and Alabama and CC and SS usually hit on the channel used.

Ray,
Unless you heard Side 1 (44.7) being used it was most likely Turner 2 (42160). I am listening to them today and the Ocean unit (airplane) is on the Turner doing speed and they switched to Turner 2. I am on the Tulsa site and can't hear Turner 2 unless they get closer to the Tulsa site. I think they are working between the Bristow and Carney site. Very busy on the Turner today as to be expected.

I am here in BA and just heard them chase down a car going as high as 104 through the Miday eastbound, both Ocean unit and Trooper waiting in the Midway McDonalds @ 13:06-13:20 on Turner 2.

I have all the "lowbands" programmed in and unlocked so they weren't using that.

If you are talking about radar detectors....(you mentioned KA band.....)
most OHP troops use what is called "Instant On' I/O meaning
they push a button and can get your speed in about a second.

Some do use constant on, C/O, which gives you a chance.

With laser, you have ----no chance---

Also most radar detectors under $200 are horrible.

I have Escort's Redline, which boasts to be the very best in the market, with
a 5-8 mile range. But it costs around $400

Also. I don't think it is an absolute requirement for troopers to advise dispatch
when they go 10-60...could be wrong about this however....
