Now, a BCD996P2 and HomePatrol 2.

Last year, it was a BCD536HP and BCD396XT.

The last five years before that, BCD996XT and HomePatrol 1.

I hope I keep my current two for five years like the first generation. :)

Forgot to add to the above: I only really bought the 996XT and HomePatrol -1. The rest were results of trades+cash. Sold the 996XT and used that cash plus more to buy the 536HP. Sold HomePatrol-1 and bought a 396XT. Sold the 536HP and bought a 996P2.
The HomePatrol-2 was won on an e-Bay auction. I used most of the money from the sale of my 396XT to finance the bulk of the HomePatrol-2 purchase.

I think it decodes and receives as well as the 536. It would not be considered an upgrade to go to the 996p2 because you won't get all the features an SD card brings such as recording, unlimited system sizes, onboard database, etc.

However, you will receive just as well, and be able to much easier read the screen, even if you have to do a little more yourself to program.

I have both and use the 996p2 more.

Was thinking of doing the same. Is the 996P2 an upgrade from the 536HP in your opinion? Can you tell if it receives and decodes better?

I would say it is not an upgrade. I got tired of the "boot" procedure on start up with the 536HP. I love analysis and I was not able to do that with the 536HP. I chose the 996P2 as I was able to use Unitrunker with the online USB cable and also use Pro96.com with the Serial Port cable. I also like color coding different channel alerts, the 996P2 has multi colors. The 536HP comes in one flavor - vanilla (white display)

However, the WiFi feature was good, the replay (playback) was good. Sentinel software was nice to use as well. I was able to upload my HomePatrol files into the 536 from day 1 and scan my preferred setup as opposed to importing the whole database. The 536HP could pick up a "fly fart", it is good on the weak signals. The 996P2 plays nice robust P25 audio on Phase I and Phase II.

There are a lot of considerations to ponder.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I will just stick it out with the 536HP and just look at upgrading my antenna.

You call that a collection with rare radios and there is no mid band Saber? Heck, even I have one of those.
