So to the original poster, it's interesting that you would talk about the Fanboys on the Uniden forums LOL.

My understanding is you got rid of the unit and don't own it anymore so recommendations to you to improve its performance are moot.

The main thing about the sds100 is it does very well with P2 simulcast systems that are subject to simulcast distortion secondary to LSM. That's its big plus.

It has often been said it should be supplemented with another receiver if you want to listen to the wide range of things to listen to.

It's true that professional subscriber radios are out there but they are expensive and it is also true that the professional pagers work very well but they're not scanners per se.

The SDS series is what it is and those who are most familiar with it can tell you the pluses and cons.

Again it's fruitless to try to help you with remedies for some of the your complaints because you got rid of it, It is a sophisticated and complicated radio to use and master

At least you've been able to verbalize your feelings. :p

Bob,

I think you are misunderstanding.

The OP doesn't and hasn't owned the scanner.

He is quoting a Buyer from Amazon's review.
Oh okay doc, let me read that post again. It probably has something to do with my blurry eyes. LOL

Okay Steve sorry about that I did miss read your post. All the answers here are pretty good, I will say the reception on 700 megahertz P2 simulcast systems are great.

I guess this all depends on what exactly are you going to listen to and what are your priorities. I was amazed when I put my Motorola gear next to the SDS 100 using the remtronix sds100 antenna in my kitchen and a 700 megahertz P2 simulcast system a few counties away came in just as well on the SDS 100 as it did on the apx.

The radio is highly customizable and you can set it up anyway you want including the display. My display has not seen any color since the day I took it out of the box as I use a black background with white text, I've also cleared most of all the information off of the screen except for very few things I feel I need.

I think that review on Amazon is very negative. You have radio reference as a very detailed guide on how to use the radio.

Lots of good advice you're going to find here in helping you make a decision.

I attached the SMA-USB adapter that jonwienke sells and found that it works well, which includes some amount of heat dissipation. The back of the case gets warm, but not uncomfortably so. Nor does the adapter get all that warm.

I'm using the GRE/RS 800Mhz antenna to listen to the MSP 700Mhz system in the greater Boston area. I'm getting very good reception with clear audio. I'm very happy with this scanner.

I agree that the speaker audio is "tinny", but I attribute that more to the size of the speaker than anything else. I don't know what the process was that lead the decision to use this case instead of the one that was used with the 436HP. Maybe the battery configuration was a factor. Still, it's pretty easy to work around the speaker with either an earphone or external speaker.

The SDS100 works great, and the "heat issue* is not really an issue - it just bothers some people (I owned a plasma TV that could heat the entire room, but it worked great.) But, several people have mentioned that audio performance is a bit lacking, and I have to agree. The sound quality is lacking, and the audio amp is lacking when used in a noisy vehicle - it just is. So I purchased an SDS200 that is permanently installed in my vehicle, and the SDS100 is now rarely used (and will be showing up on eBay *real soon.*)

I keep a portable scanner primarily for travel. Generally, I have a portable one generation newer than my mobile/base scanners. In the case of the 536HP and SDS200 I reversed that for a couple of reasons.

I bought the SDS100 when I did because I got a good deal on it. Otherwise I was planning to stick with the 436HP for a while longer. I'm happy with that choice.
