A friend recently purchased a HP 2 so that he could pick up the new P25 II system. After programing his HP 2 he downloaded the firmware to his HP 1 and it now picks up the P25 II. Is there a need to buy a new HP 2 when the HP 1 can be upgraded or did Uniden screw up on the upgrade to the HP 1?

It would be impossible to load the firmware for the HP-2 into the HP-1.

The HP-2 firmware is in a .bin file, and can not be read by the HP-1 which requires a .scn file for the firmware.

Also, the HP-1 does not contain the hardware to decode phase II.

GrumpyGuard's suggestion above is probably what he is seeing.

If this is the system you are referring to:
St. Louis Area Trunked Emergency Radio - SLATER (P25) Trunking System, St Louis Metro Area, Multi-State - Scanner Frequencies

then, no, the HP-1 is not picking up Phase II traffic. All of the identified talkgroups in the database show a "D" in the mode column. Those are P25 Phase I tgids. While the SLATER system is capable of Phase II operation, which is why it is tagged that way, all current talkgroups that have been submitted to the database are still Phase I (the "D" label in the mode), which the HP-1 can handle.

Thanks for everyone responses, I now need to find out of the slater p25 system will be switching over to the p25 II in the near future. My department is having issues switching over to the slater system, we were to be on the new system 6 months ago, currently we are on a p25 I system (700 band). I have tried to update our Pro 106 scanners to the slater system but apparently this is not possible using the Redit program, I am wondering if I can manually enter the channels that are not phase II?
