    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

P25 / P16 max channels?

I know that a single P16 systems can support a maximum of 28 channels. Why the limitation of only 28 channels?

How many channels can a single P25 system support?

This has to do with the limit of card slots in the controller shelf for RIBs (Receive Interface board) and TIBs (Transmit interface..). Each R/TIB handles seven channels with a maximum for four cards. Those boards then interface with each station via cable. The limitation on control channels is for the same reason. The IRB board only handles four control channels, with only one slot for an active board.

There are two reasons for the limitations.

The first as noted is hardware limitations to some of the architectures. i.e number of card, and numbers of ports.

The second is the time required to assign all channels and still keep new channel assignment time under a particular specification, usually 1/2 second.

Since P25 is a technical standard there may be a defined limit to the number of channels i.e. the number of bits used for channel numbers or some other such limitation.
P25 does not define specific hardware so various manufacturers may or may not have physical interconnection limitations.

P16 only defines that channel assignments must occur in under 1/2 second. It does NOT define technically how that is to be accomplished.

The 28 channel limit is specific to Motorola's system. I don't know what the limit is on EDACS. (Or Multi-Net for that matter.)

Interesting information. Since we have five digits per hand (most of us. ;), we tend to think in terms of fives... From what you're saying it would seem like a TRS manager would want to deploy in groups of four frequencies, right?

...so for example in disneyland's 10 channel system. Wouldn't it have been more 'economical' to either scale back to 8 or jump to 12 frequencies? Are RIB/TIB boards expensive?

The newer hardware does not have this limitation. Motorola's P25 offerings allow every channel to be an alternate control channel. I'm not sure about the 3600 baud systems but they share so much hardware in common that it would not suprise me if now or in the near future you see a single site with more than 28 channels.

I was being specific to the 6809 controller. I believe this is carried on with the MTC3600 controller also.

Also, I made the mistake of switching my numbers around. It's seven channel per R/TIB. And yes, they are expensive boards.

The channel number limit for EDACS is 24. The outbound data words have room for 30 but some of that space is used for system announcements like busy group, bad radio id, etc.

I doubt it.

There is still the channel assignment issue,
AND
the fact that no more development is occurring on the 3600 BPS systems.

If, due to the usage pattern, they need 10 channels, they wouldn't scale back. And why pay for 2 repeaters (and the associated additional costs) that they probably don't need?

That is correct, the MTC3600 supports up to 28 channels.
