• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I picked up a p5100 scan model with p25 trunking on the cheap. I can program 2 Edacs systems with Rpm10b07 and they work, but for some reason, if I add a p25 trunking system to it, it throws out “Hardware Err=0069 00 0D97BC” The p5100 has Pers ver 69.00, Flash Ver J2R18H09, Bld Date 02/23/12, Dsp ver F4R06M05, Sysgrp #128. And each time I program with RPM, a box comes up looking for fw upgrade location on my computer. I always press ok and the box goes away, but I’m thinking that is looking for a fw file. Kind of stumped right now. If any one has an idea on what I need to do, ( Mark C? )..lol! I’m all ears, Thanks, Bill

Ok. After some suggestions ...apparently I need F8 or F9 dsp for the p25 trunking. So I have to find those and also info on how to do it. In RPM or Radio Maint? Little confused....and I was told my fw H09 will work with it. But do I have to reload the fw H09 before, after or not at all when I load dspF8 or F9?....maybe someone would be able to help this pea brain of mine! TIA

There are 2 components in play here... J2R18H09 is the radio code (firmware) whereas F4R06M05 is the DSP version. Your FW is current for that model radio however that DSP only supports unencrypted conventional digital. F6xxxx DSP is for encrypted conventional digital, F8 is for unencrypted P25 trunking and finally F9 supports encrypted P25 trunking. So, you will need F8 which I can hook you up with. Feel free to message me here or over at the other site (I replied there too).

Oh, and to answer your second question it's written to the radio using the Write Radio dialog in RPM. It'll query the radio when you do a write and a dialog will pop up giving you the option to select FW/DSP files.

A P5100 is a feature limited radio. There are some things that it won't do that a P7100 will do. It's been a while and I've forgotten the details but I seem to recall that it limits the number of channels and groups and systems it can support, plus I THINK that P25 trunking may also be off limits, but it has been a while and I'm not sure of that. These days, P7100s are dirt cheap so you should just get one and be done with it. Even P7300s, built on a much newer platform, are cheap enough and can be hand for under 200 bucks. But they do require upgrades to your RPM installation.

Elroy, Thanks! I’m in Florida too...west coast....l’ve been following you for years..you are very knowledgeable! The P5100 has 128 group limit and the one I have has feature # 39. I just need J2R18H09 to load along side the F8 dsp I just received. Unless you know how to extract J2R18H09 from my P5100. Or, Elroy, can I use the “Load Compressed Code” option and load the F8 dsp by itself? When I use RPM and try and program the P5100 a box comes up and wants me to load both dsp and FW. It won’t let me just load the dsp. Im still trying to figure this out, Thanks

P5100 is a phase 1 capable P25 radio but it wont do any sort of P25 encryption.

To update your firmware, you need both the radio code and DSP code files. You can't get away with just one of them. And those files need to be compatible with each other AND the feature package in your radio or errors can and will occur.

Yeah, it's encryption that a 5100 isn't supposed to be capable of and there's a channel and group limit. If you found a way to remove feature 30 from the encryption string it'd be a 7100. Good luck with that!
