I've been hearing talkgroup 27603 on my local site recently. It's confirmed as a SCDJJ talkgroup. But I'm curious about its usage and wonder anyone else knows more about it.

Every hour or two, on the hour, a radio check is performed. "DJJ Central" does a role call of various units, usually 8 to 10 units. The called units are never heard to reply. But the operator acknowledges them as if they do reply, and that's it.

I'm guessing that this is some sort of patched radio from another radio system, which is why the operator is the only one heard. Their console is transmitting on both Palmetto 800 and a local radio system at the same time. I'm not sure if this is a single facility calling other units at this same location, or a centralized monitoring center calling units a different facilities.

Anyone have any ideas? Do folks in the Columbia area ever hear any other SCDJJ talkgroups active?

When I worked for Motorola they had several centers that had the pal800 talk groups for each center programmed into their radios. As far as I know they only used the pal800 side in Columbia. A few centers don't receive and transmit very well on the pal800 side so they used the sc direct channels. They shouldn't have anything patched into the pal800 side from another radio system. I can find out a little more and get you an official answer.

Lots of DJJ activity in Columbia area. I usually have the TGs locked out. Once I did hear an inmate get a hold of a radio somehow and proceeded to tell everyone what they thought of the guards. It went on longer than I would have expected.
