• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Nope. The forum is configured so you have 30 minutes to edit a post. During that time you can delete all the text but only the admins can remove the post.
That was a mistake that hopefully I just corrected. If you've got 30 minutes to wipeout all the text in your message then there's no sense in not allowing you to delete your post within 30 minutes.

Of course, we'll still get people who will complain that 30 minutes isn't long enough.

Most tweak and peak jobs consist of little more than disabling the ALC so that the power meter will apear to show more power out. The problem is it makes you're signal splatter and you sound like garbage. AM radios that are set up to dead key 2.5 to 3.5 watts are still putting out 10-12 watts on peaks so they are fine. The difference between a 10 watt radio and a 15 or 20 watt radio are so neglegible as to be meaningless. Better to sound nice and clean.

As to a factory alignment and tune, there certainly are those who do good jobs at it.

If I was driving past one I’d have a handful of techs I know do that work. It does make a difference on radios a little close to out-of-spec.

On a near-obsolete radio, I wouldn’t spend to ship it both ways and the work.

These days most guys running C-25 & C-29 have it as a component in a multi-component system. It’s valued for audio quality, not high performance.

A Jeep aint easy. And mobile is a more difficult environment and can’t match a good base station antenna in RX/TX. That’d be my choice for it (I have several comparable radios on that shelf).

“Best 2023 Mobile” thread, otherwise. Can’t see a reason to use non-NRC in mobile. Don’t handicap yourself. (Try a Harrison if that size/spec is better and read thread in that way).

Based on what I've learned here I am first going to get the antenna dialed in. The Laird C27 is fair but I am probably going to get a Larsen, either the NMO30 (with the longer whip) or the NMO27.

I may eventually replace the Cobra with the President Thomas. The McKinley is extra money for features I won't use and I prefer the smaller size. I might include the President mic with the neon green PTT. If I get the Thomas, I will probably also pick up a Randy II.

I faired much better on the VHF/UHF side of things.

President makes good radios. I've had a couple and they've been really solid. As long as you don't need SSB the Thomas should be great. If space is a concern they make one that is even smaller, I think it's called the Bill.
