Anyone happen to hear that foot chase and shooting last night in PG? It was on the PG Palmer Park simulcast channels 3 (495.1375) and 9 (494.3125) - then after about an hour was confined to just the channel 9 portion. Start time was about 11:30 pm.
It started as a foot chase with shots exchanged between the officer and the mook. The mook was shot but managed to make it onto the second floor landing of an apartment building. From there he was blasting away at the cop. The most tense part of the whole episode was that no one seemed able to find the officer for the first few minutes while he was under fire. The dispatcher didn't help by reporting the wrong address on Pennsylvania Avenue a couple of times. The officer was shouting into his radio that he was being shot at and no one was showing up to help. He sounded really terrified. You could even hear the shots in the background while he was hollering for help to get there. They eventually did and it was just a standoff for about an hour. Everyone and their brother responded to the 10-13 once word spread and the area was saturated with special ops, the helicopter, K9 units, plain clothes ops, etc. The commander ordered a shield brought to the scene and also asked for a long gun. It wasn't quite clear from the radio traffic if they used the rifle from a distance to end it but eventually the SOD folks went in and found him dead with the gun lying next to him. Meanwhile, other cops set up barriers around the area and reported the mook's family members were there wanting to be let in but weren't allowed. There were reports of other officers climbing ladders brought by the fire department and through windows into some of the apartments to protect the occupants during the event. All told, it was about a two hour operation and among the most exciting listening you could ever want to hear on a scanner. Prince George's County often gets overlooked because they aren't among the trunked crowd but they are among the most active and exciting police departments in the area to listen to.
