Here's some snaps of RG8x, LMR240 and RG-58 reducers for those interested and following along.

As well as a Bakelite panel mount SO-239 and a separated PL-259 so one can see the solder holes PRC was talking about as well as how they (the reducers) install into the PL-259.

Threads like this are good, because someone might not know, and now they know :)

Are those the Ns that come apart to install like a PL-259 and take the reducers for the smaller cables? If so those come in handy for field repairs where you may not have the correct N kit for the cable needing attention.

I don't see it in the PL-259's that you seem to use in the US. Here we have 2 PL259's, one for RG8 and a similar one for RG58, in fact the RG58 is the same as the RG8 except it has a screw-in reducer.

Yup, same as here in the U.S.

Nope, these are crimp with conductive sealant gel inside, so it bonds to the shield as well as making it watertight from the coax side.

After using N connectors for scanning, I mostluy caved to UHF connectors for Ham just because so many antennas had them and the radios have them. Didnt want to switch them out in the radios, might have messed it up.

For thr N connector it only takes a little bit of overdriving to mess up the the female side. Picked up an N adapter from a hamfest that did that and was messing up my alpha delta N switch connection. The pin was just a little bit long and protruded above that inner cylinder and had to pinch the female 4 prongs back together to get a good connection again. Same thing with a store bought cable with N connector, just a little too long and the receiving portion split apart enough to degrade the connection.

Could do without the SMA connections on handhelds. BNC would be easier. Did find a SMA male to so-239 adapter at a hamfest.and American Radio Supply that fits snugly on the handheld so I can connect the HT directly to a pl259. Usually just use BNC adapters on the HT and leave them there to protect the SMA female threads.

I've discovered that a lot of the cheap adapters/connectors sold at HamFests are just that, cheap. I've installed a lot of N connectors, and while they are more difficult that others to put on, I've never had a quality name brand connector damage the mating connector.
