I wanted to know if anybody has ever tried inputting the frequency's used in radar guns into their scanner and used the scanner as a radar detector.

I wouldn't think most scanners would go that high. I know my Pro-95 is only good to 1.3ghz and most (if not all?) radars are well above that.

I think most police speed radars are up around 10GHz, way beyond what our scanners cover.

I have state police wireless mic freq. programed into my scanner. I was driving back into town going about 5 over when I start to get interference on thoes freq. I slow down and 1/2 a mile later a state police car drives by.

but I've NEVER gotten stopped for 5 over.
Although I have gotten two speeding tickets, both times I was doing well over 5 over. :D

I live in New Mexico, only speeding ticket i got was 12 over. But I have heard people get pulled over doing 5 over, no ticket tho. The road I was on is one of thoes that people like to speed on and there have been many deaths from it.

5 over???

Thats like being drunk on one light beer.

If you are going to do it, do it right.

I can't remember the last time I was stopped for less that 20 over. (luc kly, I usually get ticketed for 19 :) )

P.S. If you can get the officer to say something like; "Well you were going XX, then I couldn't keep up with you!" you get bonus points!

Sure 5 over isn't bad, untill you run into a cop having a really bad day.

cops around here usually put thier "alarm" on 10 over while at a speed trap; also, if you have a radar detector its less likly to get out of it, and the fine is more; they tend to sit at an angle impossible to anticipate so as soon as the detector goes off, hes got you

I've never read any law that says if you got a dector the fine is more. Just tell them "sorry for speeding, I didn't realize my radar dector wasn't on"

theres not a law that says that, its just the cops around here are less likely to give u any slack; and since i know half of them, i know that they wont

It may not increase your speeding ticket fine, but in some states radar detectors are illegal, and will result in the fine you end up paying being more after they tack on the detector charge.

Not to mention the cost of buying another one after he takes yours hom....er.... sends it to the station to be destroyed!

And while detectors aren't verbotten around here, if it's visable you can pretty much expect a ticket no matter what reason you concoct for "accidently" straying over the speed limit.

Next to a scanner...
Another point, most radar detectors suck. I have a pair of radar guns, and both of them can aquire a target's speed very quickly (like around 1/7th of a second). The radar detector I have in my car (a Cobra) takes about 4-7 seconds to detect a K-band radar (sitting about 2 feet away), and about 1 second to get a Ka signal (same distance). The cop can click it on, get your speed, lock it in, and turn off the radar - all within one second. Your detector probably didn't even sense the radar. Most cops probably don't do that, but it is possible. I agree with one of the above posts - best way to avoid a ticket is to not speed (and in some areas - not go too slow either!). I don't always abide by my own advise though!

I would stick with putting the input channels of your area's PD in your scanner just in front of the repeater (or Base). I do this, program a 0 delay and a beep alert. This alerts you when you are within simplex range (about 1-20 miles, depending on your scanner set-up). Use that strength meter to determine approx. how far away they are.

That is because you own a Cobra. Check out http://www.radardetector.net/ to see videos and what not. There is a couple of guys on that board that freq this board, we are all electronic gurus.

I don't think that's the only reason. When you turn it on anyone on the highway while behind them, the lights on their detectors don't light up for several seconds either. I know Cobra is a fairly cheap detector, but I'm in the opinion that if I'm the only one on the road (which is common in West Texas), I will have no advance warning on the radar anyhow. Better safe than sorry - just do the speed limit.

I usually do 5 over except through federal property, they will pull you over. I have a radar detector, but only to remind me to keep my speed down. If i get pulled over, i have several (get outa ticket passes).

I have my radio going, my id hanging, the blue lights visible, the badge in the wallet. It all helps, but around here, you know all the cops, they will get on the radio and say, slow it down. (it's been done to me!)

All well and good but that still doesn't help if you encounter a cop that's having a bad day. I was pulled over many years ago about 30 miles outside of Goldfield, Nevada on Highway 95 at about 9:00 at night. This Esmeralda County deputy and me were the only vehicles on the road for about 10 miles in either direction. He said he had me on VASCAR at 71 in a 65 zone. I showed him my license, which was in my badge case along with my S.O. ID. We talked about cop stuff for a few minutes and then he said, "Well, I'm going to give you a break. You can mail in the fine instead of having to go back to Goldfield and pay it like you normally would because you are an out of state resident." :!: I thanked him for his kindness and told him I hoped he would one day visit my county so I could return the favor. :x

ROFL  Rad. I can't believe he did that. What a jerk. Just wondering, did you fight the ticket at all?
