I have fought this, There is a "we hate 800 Mhz" crowd out there Charles key, Tim Pope and a few others. This IP system is a joke "hard patch everone to everyone" Can you say nightmare??

I would bet that it is an OpenSky system or something like that.

Anti-800mhz has nothing to do with anti-IP. IP based systems are not a bad thing on paper. Implementation seems to be the greatest issue at this point. I am sure there will be a p25 IP format sometime in the near future. I bet he was talking about a p25 system anyway and was confusing digital with IP.

The "Honorable Representative has been sold a bill of goods.

He is comparing an IP interconnection system to a statewide radio system.

They are different things that serve different needs.

He then implies that IR-radio is a standard of some kind.

THEN goes on to talk about "broadband" wireless services.

I think the lobbyists have him well liquored up! (J/K, not an actual claim of inappropriate behavior of either the lobbyists or of him.)

This is packet radio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_radio

and this is what I based my 2-minute examination of a new technology on:
http://www.securitydocs.com/library/3405

Particularly this part:
A mobile mesh network normally relies on Internet Protocol (IP), a universal networking standard, to intertwine wirelessly between IP-enabled first responder devices and networks. Unlike existing point-to-point radio systems, there is no central point of failure with a mesh topology. The more radios that join the network, the more diverse and failure-resistant the network becomes.
So in essence every police car/fire truck is a repeater, and there will probably be another antenna hung on each "small town under 30,000 people" tower to communicate with the next "small town". Nice theory, as long as EVERY radio isn't repeating everything it hears. Even in the best case scenerio there's going to be a lot of packets crashing. And imagine the confusion of hearing your unit say something, then hearing it again as that transmission took another path and comes in to the PD again. Hope they get all the bugs worked out.

After a quick Google... it looks like packet radio, for voice.

IP-Radio?

No, it is usually used to mean tying the back-end audio together with an IP network rather then a central switch like an ACU-100 or console.

OK, I was just going by that first web page (above) that I looked at. Hadn't taken any more time to look into it any more than that.

Still the Motorola system works and is a better system than this I.P. system the 'law makers" don't want Motorola to have a monopoly so there going to put everyone's life a risk so the state of Oklahoma can have a "free market" in the P.S. radio area, If given a chance people will see the light, And see how great 800Mhz trunked radio systems can be also everyone that uses the system needs to be properly trained on how to use it..

I think the issue is that people are confusing two VERY DIFFERENT solutions to tow VERY DIFFERENT problems.
