Maybe; Maybe not!
I don't make recommendations with knowing enough first to back them up!

I think if somehow, somebody could educate them on the basics of trunking radio and the advantages of it, they wouldn't hate it so much. Then it just comes down to the $$. The problem is, most people that sign the checks and make the decisions are too close minded to listen. People fear what they don't understand, and you can't teach a dog new tricks if he doesn't want to learn.PolarBear25 said:I have fought this, There is a "we hate 800 Mhz" crowd out there Charles key, Tim Pope and a few others...

That applies in everyday life too not just politics or emergency services. People in general do not like change. The bad thing is the older i get the more i have noticed i am becoming that way as well.

If you look at some of the counties in Oklahoma there is one repeater for all PD's and the SO. There is one channel for the Fire toneouts. There is one channel (maybe) for EMS activity. These are all that they would ever need and they work great. So if the system works, you don't really have any other needs, and the other counties can come in and talk to you already, then why would you feel compelled to spend SEVERAL thousand dollars for new radios that try to fix a problem that you don't have. Federal grants are needed for other projects usually. There are not enough DHS grant dollars to switch over (cause rural counties don't get much..maybe in the 20-50 thousand range) and they need that money for PPE gear and other specialty gear for dealing with HAZMAT types of issues like Meth houses (huge problem in rural areas) and other things and that gear is VERY expensive with continual service costs which would use some future DHS grants.
So, I would have to say that if I was that sheriff, and I had to get re-elcted at some point to keep putting food on my family's table, then the wisest choice would be for me to choose the gear over the radios. That is the safest for the sheriff and his men. There is just no way to justify the cost when there isn't the need.
Trunked radio works GREAT for the large metro areas because there is a large quantity of traffic with a lot of other agencies that may/may not be able to talk to each other. They also do not have to go far to service their radios either...explain to a rural Pushmataha Co SO that he has to drive to Durant (2-3 Hours) or worse Ardmore (3-4 Hours) or even worse OKC (5-6 Hours) just to fix a radio problem, and they will probably laugh at you. DPS doesn't want non-DPS/Tulsa folks working on/programming their radios.

It'd be insane to even consider a TRS for my VFD, but for growing communities like Collinsville & Skiatook in the Tulsa Metro, I think it's a great idea.

Ascension Parish shared the system with the state. Take some of the drug forfiture money that is siezed and apply it towards the system. It's a shame that politics has to play with the lives of the first responders and other public safety personnel.
