Hello all.

I believe this is my first time posting on these forums, so I apologize in advance for any errors. Let me get to the point.

Almost a year ago, my parents got me my first scanner: a BC125AT. It's pretty simple but it does its job. However, recently I've noticed that sometimes the scanner will not come on when I hold down the power button. I usually have to go in and switch the two batteries and then it will start up. I don't think my parents bought it used, so I doubt it issue was caused by a previous owner. Any suggestions?

Also, the two antennae I have for the scanner aren't well suited for what I use it for. I primarily use my scanner when I railfan as a heads-up for oncoming trains. However, I wasn't able to receive a clear signal from a train that was less than two miles from my location. I was outside at the time in clear weather. Ironically, I was able to pick up the fire dispatchers in my hometown, almost 80 miles from here.

Is there an antenna that is suited to picking up railroad transmissions better than the default antenna that I have now? It would certainly be a big help.

Thanks,
