Smiles Rred ! ... :) ... that made my evening... :)

The cattle attenuation was an interesting aside to that project, and made for a short paragraph in my final report... and a little levity .

What we were attempting for a "client agency" was to use a microwave signal to passively inter mod with signals originating "south of, and along the border"...... "chatter" is a good non-descript term. Our "client" was interested in seeing if by utilizing what we call the Radio Luxemburg Effect, certain entities "could listen in." That's why the low skimming beam path and.... and all I will say...:)

This is departing far afield of the original topic- but that's what I love to do.
Here is an an in-depth look at Passive Intermod.
Warning: heavy reading, a quiz will be given afterwards....... :)

"I know of a similar story with an AT&T microwave link..."

I read an account of a problem that happened on weekdays but not weekends. It turned out that a mooring location for one of the Goodyear Blimps (which are away covering sporting events on the weekends) was located along a microwave link path.

At times a blimp was in the way.

I debated whether this might fit this topic- predicting range and coverage areas... but it semi-fits.... maybe the ultimate in ranging and coverage predictions.
.
This morning I received an invitation from one of the university consortiums at the Apache Point Observatory for a visit. This is an astronomical observatory located high in the New Mexico mountains that does, among many other things- measures the effects of lasers shot at the moon.
There were laser reflectors placed on the lunar surface during the Apollo moon missions, still actively used in projects to ponder the very nature of gravity, exploring Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
.
As far as it applies to this Forum's topic, the accuracy of the distances measurements are in the millimeters (!!) , and the return reflections are measured in single photons.
.
Its slated for late winter, and they are promising me, among the pure science- quite a light show.
