• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Encryption Compatibility between Radio Models

I'd like to gather information on which "budget and entry-level" DMR radios have encryption compatibility between models. Hopefully we can use this thread as a repository for this information across manufacturers and models. If anyone has experience in this space, please let us know. It would be helpful to capture the radio models, firmware revs, and the compatible encryption protocols.

This inquiry stems from some recent radio purchases I made. I bought some Retevis N30D mobile radios and a Retevis RT73 mobile radio, hoping to use them together with encryption in under a Part 90 license. Both radios advertise AES256 encryption, but digging a little deeper on the Internet reveals that the RT73 may only support ARC4 encryption. The N30D programming software supports inputting full 64-character AES256 keys. However, the RT73 programming software's encryption menu only supports a maximum of six two-character (hex?) values for each key. My next project will be to try to use one of the lower encryption levels on the N30D (which aren't identified by protocol) to try to match the RT73.

I have notes from a Retevis website I saw a while back that seemed to indicate these radios are encryption-compatible: RT73 & RB22, HT1 & RT43, RT90 & RT3S. However there weren't any details on what settings to use to make them compatible. I can't find that website now though, unfortunately, and I didn't capture the link.

Here are the radios that support RC4/AES256 compatible with Motorola:

TYT MD UV380/390 PLUS
Baofeng DR 1802U
Baofeng DM32
Radtel RT-4D

Be careful you have to look on Aliexpress, some models are sold without the AES256 like for the Baofeng DR 1802U, you have to choose the right model.
Those that are AES compatible have an AES logo on the product photo.

Models without AES don't have the right firmware version but you can't download the firmware at the moment, so you have to buy the right version from the start.
