Greetings all,

When I first purchased my 396T, the first 'working' UCAN configuration I was able to use was control channel only and entering every tower as a separate system.

Lately I've been experimenting dividing UCAN between 3 systems (to fit all the TGID's as you can only add 200 per system) and this works, but it's pretty convoluted as to organization. Each system has all the control frequencies, and a third of the TGID's setup numerically.

I'm curious as to how any other 396T owner's out there are scanning UCAN, and what your preferred setup has been.

There are a few of us that scan UCAN with a 396.

The way I do it is to make the TG lists the way I want them. I have a Utah county north system, a salt lake system, and a few others. I duplicate the TGs into a few systems. For example I have UC north talkgroups with the UC simo control channel as 1 system, and the exact same talkgroups with Nelson CC as another system. I do a similar thing for salt lake. It allows me to hear the talkgroups I want in a variety of locations. I have SL county in a separate system as the incorporated cites in SL county. Too many TGs for one system.

Dynamic memory sure give a lot of programming options!

Thanks for the reply, N7.

I've found that with my 396 and scantenna, I'm able to pick up most of the Salt Lake traffic from up here in Box Elder. I've even been able to pull in some Utah County freqs - it's amazing the difference an antenna made.

I'm still really new at this, but I think I'm finally starting to get comfortable with the scanner. I was told that the 396 might be a little too much for a newb (it's my first scanner), but honestly, I didn't want to pay for something and just turn around and upgrade a little while later.

How'd you get into this hobby? I saw your 'station' on another thread, wow.

A friend had borrowed a scanner from someone when I was in 7th grade. It was a radio shack 4 channel crystal controlled handheld unit. The concept of listening to what the police were doing was so cool. Later I had a friend in 8th grade sell me his 8 channel base scanner for $15. Radio has always fascinated me. For some reason, I've never really lost interest. Interest has faded at times, but I always come back to it. I keep adding equipment. I should sell some of the excess, but the resale value is low enough that I hold onto the unique eqipment. The older radios have more sentimental value now than dollar value.
