If you just want to get in to monitoring, you might consider an SDR (Software Defined Radio) dongle with an HF downconverter. Those would be much cheaper than a traditional, purpose built receiver Once you're into a receiver, you may end up with buyers remorse wishing you'd spent a little extra money for the full transceiver.

I do see your point.
I found websdr.org

It's like having a high end receiver (I think). For now, I'm using that.

I picked up a Superstar SS-158EDX 10/12 meter radio to go in my vintage truck. Really is a good 70's look LOL. And gives me ham bands! But if you're just going to be getting an HF radio, FT-891 is a good choice. I really like the IC-7100. IC-7300 very good choice as well. Depends on what your budget allows. You could look for some decent used equipment. Good luck!
