Hi, I am wondering if someone can give me a few suggestions on what scanner I need to purchase to hear the city and county police scanners in Caldwell County/Princeton, Kentucky.
Currently, I can hear their fire department only.
Thank you!

You need to buy a scanner that will do P25 for starters also if you plan on KSP as they are building a new Statewide Trunking System you will need a scanner that will do P25 Phase 2 Trunking.
What will fit your needs are list by price Handheld then the base version.
1. BCD325P2 Handheld $408
2. BCD996P2 Base $389
3. BCD436HP Handheld $549
4. BCD536HP Base $649
5. SDS100 Handheld $649
6. SDS200 Base $699
Now all of the above Scanners are UPGRADEABLE to DMR and or NXDN by buying UPGRADE KEYS from my.uniden.com

Thank you so very much. Is there an advantage/disadvantage as handheld vs base? Also, as silly as this may sound....do they use like a wireless connection or do they work just by turning them on whether u have wireless or not?

The scanners receive radio transmissions directly from the agency transmitters, not wifi. You can easily carry a handheld scanner with you. They operate on self-contained batteries or external power. The base/mobile units are larger and operate on an AC adapter or the 12vdc from your vehicle battery.
