KF7YN - "BTW, TG 2888 is VECC PD Service Request, not Taylorsville PD Ch 2."
Is this VECC or UPD? Is there a difference? I'm trying to sort out how these agencies interact.
Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) dispatches for UPD and most of SLCo except Sandy, SLC, UTA, UHP and a few others.

Agreed. But my question would be, is TG/Channel 2888 "VECC PD Service Request", or should it be "UPD Service Request"? Is there a difference?

I didn't get into monitoring any trunking system until a couple years ago, when they started talking about the P25 system, so I can't say for sure that there's a difference.

Looking at the old 800 UCAN system, I see a few VECC PD Service TGs.

Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) is a multi-agency dispatch center.
UPD may be one of the agencies that VECC dispatches for.

Explanation: When UCA was on 800 MHz, and I called the non-emergency number for VECC,
The call taker at VECC would transfer my call to SLCO or UHP if that's who had jurisdiction
for the area that I was calling for. So, with the move to 700 MHz, I'm not sure if VECC is dispatching
for SLCO & UHP or if those agencies are still dispatching their own.
And if you call VECC about something in Bluffdale, they transfer you to Central Utah Dispatch in Spanish Fork.
because Bluffdale contracts with Saratoga Springs for police.

With VECC on 800, there were channels specific to member departments: West Valley, South Jordan, Draper, etc
There were also VECC channels for multi-agency use: Fire channels, Service channels, (aka request channels)
Some ops channels, and two car to car channels.
Listen to a dispatch for fire or EMS: "Respond on VECC Fire Three". The Service/Request channels are probably also VECC.
The OPS and TAC channels may now be VECC or agency specific. (Salt Lake County only)
Other counties have their own channel setup.

See if this helps/hinders: Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) is a government agency that offers dispatch and management services to Central Utah agencies. ---From their web site: "The primary purpose of the Center is to fund and operate a communications center which handles certain emergency communications and other services for the member communities, including 911 services, and police, fire and medical dispatching."---
Two of the "member communities" are UPD and UFA. So I guess the question is, "do we (the listeners) want all the "member communities" labeled as VECC, some of them (UFA/UPD), or none? Tough call.

For me, it comes down to whether the pool of VECC talkgroups have exclusive usage isolated to specific towns/agencies/geographies. If so, put the town/area as the label for the TG. If VECC service is only for UPD, then it can be a 'UPD Service' label, and VECC is not relevant, but if all agencies using VECC use it for Service, then it is 'VECC Service'

UPD / SL County Sheriff moved their dispatch operations to the VECC building back on Jan 01, 2019, with that being said all of the TGs that they (UPD) had prior moved with them including the "UPD Request 1 and Request 2", this is where all the UPD and S/O guys would go for service related requests and traffic. That was totally separate from the "VECC PD Service 1, VECC PD Service 2" TGs where a lot of the smaller agencies would to run names, plates, request tows etc. The only one that I remember having their own "service" channel on the old 800 system for VECC was West Valley everyone else such as Draper, Taylorsville, Cottonwood Heights would all use the "VECC PD Service" channels for the same requests. I have not listened much to the new 700 system service channels yet so I don't know if they followed the old radio mapping but a good indication as to how to label it in my opinion would be to monitor them for a little but and see who is using that particular TG and go from there. Here is an example if you are hearing multiple agencies say on the same TG "Taylorsville unit XX or Draper XX can I get a 27-29 check on XXX or can I get a next in line tow then that should be labeled as "VECC PD Services 1 or 2" and if you only hear a UPD or S/O unit such as "UDP XX or Magna XX can I get a 27-29 on XX" Then we should label that as "UPD / SO Request 1 or 2" if that makes since. Sometimes you might even catch them saying stuff like South Jordan XX on Service or UPD XX on Request. Hope that was not too long winded.

Standardizing Alpha Tags for the New UCAN (P25) System

As we continue to identify talkgroups (TGs) for the new UCAN (P25) system, it’s clear that Alpha Tags are becoming inconsistent. To address this, we need a standardized format to ensure clarity, consistency, and ease of use for all new submissions.

Current Issues with Inconsistent Alpha Tags

One major issue with the current Alpha Tags is the inconsistent use of "SL", which creates confusion about whether it refers to Salt Lake City (SLC) or Salt Lake County (SLCo). Additionally, variations like "Salt Lk" are vastly different from "SLC" and add to the ambiguity. This lack of clarity can mislead users, especially when it comes to regional agencies such as Unified Police Department (UPD) and Unified Fire Authority (UFA), which do not operate within Salt Lake City proper.

Examples of Inconsistent Alpha Tags for UPD

  1. "UPDSLC West":
    • Issue: Including "SLC" misrepresents UPD’s jurisdiction, as this talkgroup serves areas like Magna and Kearns in Salt Lake County, not Salt Lake City proper.
    • Corrected: "UPD West Disp" to reflect Unified Police Dispatch for the western part of Salt Lake County.
  2. "UPDSLC East":
    • Issue: "SLC" in this tag suggests a connection to Salt Lake City, but it actually covers areas like Holladay, Millcreek, and White City.
    • Corrected: "UPD East Disp" to clearly indicate Unified Police Dispatch for eastern Salt Lake County.

Examples of Inconsistent Alpha Tags for UFA

  1. "SL UFA Car 2":
    • Issue: Prefixing "SL" implies that Unified Fire Authority operates in Salt Lake City, which has its own fire department. UFA serves unincorporated areas and other cities in Salt Lake County.
    • Corrected: "UFA Car 2" to reflect the countywide scope of Unified Fire operations.
  2. "SL UFA EOD"(Explosive Ordnance Disposal):
    • Issue: The "SL" prefix incorrectly ties UFA’s specialized teams to Salt Lake City.
    • Corrected: "UFA EOD" to accurately represent Unified Fire Authority’s countywide explosive ordnance disposal operations.
  3. "SL UFA TRN 1"(Training Channel 1):
    • Issue: The prefix "SL" falsely associates UFA training with Salt Lake City.
    • Corrected: "UFA TRN 1" to reflect UFA’s broader training activities across the county.
  4. "SL UFA Ops 1":
    • Issue: "SL" suggests city-specific operations, while UFA operations span across the county.
    • Corrected: "UFA Ops 1" for Unified Fire Authority Operations Channel 1.

1. Consistent Prefixing

Alpha Tags should begin with standardized prefixes to identify agencies and departments. These prefixes ensure quick recognition and maintain a logical structure.

Agency Prefixes

  • SLC: Salt Lake City
  • SLCo: Salt Lake County
  • UPD: Unified Police Department
  • Sandy: Sandy City Departments
  • WJ: West Jordan
  • WV: West Valley
  • SSL: South Salt Lake
  • UofU: University of Utah
  • Granite: Granite School District
  • VECC: Valley Emergency Communications Center
  • Bluffdale: Bluffdale City Departments

Function Suffixes

Add a suffix to specify the role or function of the talkgroup:
  • PD: Police Department
  • FD: Fire Department
  • Tac: Tactical
  • Disp: Dispatch
  • Pg: Paging
  • Ops: Operations
  • SAR: Search and Rescue
  • EOC: Emergency Operations Center
  • HLT: Health Department
  • SCH: School District Operations

2. Examples

The following examples show how to convert inconsistent or lengthy Alpha Tags into a standardized format:

Before:

  1. "Salt Lake City Police 1 (Pioneer)"
  2. "Salt Lake City Fire 3 Paging"
  3. "Unified Police West (Oquirrh): Magna, Kearns"
  4. "South Valley Police South: Jordan, Riverton, Herriman"

After:

  1. SLC PD 1 Disp: Salt Lake City Police Pioneer
  2. SLC FD 3 Pg: Salt Lake City Fire 3 Paging
  3. UPD West Disp: Unified Police Dispatch West (Oquirrh Area)
  4. South Valley PD Disp: South Valley Police Dispatch: Jordan, Riverton, Herriman

3. Key Advantages

  • Clarity: TG names are concise and informative.
  • Consistency: Uniform formatting eliminates confusion.
  • Scalability: The structure can accommodate future additions without complexity.
Let’s apply these guidelines to ensure the UCAN (P25) system remains well-organized and user-friendly. Suggestions for further refinements are welcome!
Hi, I'm new to this and I'm a provider for Iron County Utah. But in Salt Lake City area and West Valley City area. What are the sites that I can put into my SDS 200
I thought I had the sites along. On a 15 program dinner, but evidently simulcast. An Godiva, don't do anything here. Thank you for any help. I come up for the hockey games

From the Jan VECC Board of Trustees meeting (look for more changes to the naming protocol:
"After we finished the initial programming during the cut over, we found that many of the agency's templates were missing radio channels that they had originally requested. We believe that to be a miscommunication among some of the UCA staff on what channels were acceptable or what could be added into those templates. So we have met with UCA, given them a punch list of things that need to be corrected. This includes the renaming of channels that are better identified for the agencies as what they have known over the past 20, 30 years. So we're going to be making changes to those."

Salt Lake Simulcast site is not transmitting. In my WS1040 scanner, I have every UCA frequency listed in RR.
I can receive control channels for Nelson Peak, Mahogany, and Shawshank. No CC for SL Simul.
If I move to a north facing window, I can receive North Salt Lake, Francis Peak, and Mt Ogden.
If you are traveling in the Orem area, try scanning the Utah County talk Groups from Scotts Peak.
When I'm in Orem, Scotts Peak gives me the best reception.

I've had SL Simu up most of the night with no issues. The current CC is on 774.83125 and has been for quite a few weeks.

SL Simulcast came in occasionally as i hit Orem area lehi but that Nelson was booming in passed 4500 south i15( i headed back to cedar city today at 2) but my sds200 doesn't have a "Hold" button.... i put in a mess of sites in when i left cedar city yesterday. so it kept scanning . Mahogany magna didn't yield anything ..Cedar Hills was good than more as i headed south Levan peak ,Gillies. I'm gonna get a GPS antenna before i go back up for the next hockey game try that thank you.

Well, I have been wrong before! I put all of the SL Simul freqs in a favorite list and scanned them conventionally.
What do you know! I got reception, but it is spotty. Even a weak CC on 774.83125.
