Having a problem with printing from my laptop which is running Windows XP (it's not going to support Windows 7 so upgrading is not an option). It constantly says that the Print Spooler Service is not running. It even says "Print Spooler Service" is not running even as Services.exe shows that it is. I have stopped the service, started it, rebooted. The computer just does not know it's there anymore. Any ideas?

There are no printers installed on this machine currently, I am attempting to have it locate the printer on the network and install that one but it can't do it until this service starts running.

your Spooler file : spoolsv.exe is either missing or corrupted.

do you have a XP CD Laying around? if so, launch windows, goto ( replace ? with your CD Drive ) : ?:\i386\spoolsv.ex_

dont open, but instead right click, COPY, then navigate to this location:

C:\Windows\System32 and paste it in that folder, reboot and see if your machine starts spooler, specifically pointed to the spoolsv.exe command in the Services Module

if THAT doesn't work, then you need a SP2 based XP CD, because, they removed the recovery console in the SP3 CD's grab you a ISO Copy of a SP2 XP Home/Pro/MC (Media Center) and boot to it.

at the first setup screen, after it loads drivers.... Press R to enter the Recovery Console. Log into the XP Session that it prompts you as the Administrator. enter password if present..... when it says your logged in, type this command:

(replace ? with your CD Drive Letter)

copy ?:\i386\spoolsv.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe

press enter

type exit once it says the copy is complete, and reboot. your spoolsv.exe should be replaced with the new copy and spooler should work automatically. if it doesn't, then there is something wrong with your services or even worse your entire XP installation is either compromised or corrupt. try the first steps and come back with the results

Did you try? Go to start... then run... and type services.msc

When the next screen comes up... scroll down to the Print Spooler and click on it.

Then click Restart the service

Here's the spooler running and you can set it to start automatically when Windows starts...

K4, i think you missed his part about he says windows says its running but its actually not.

and he has tried starting/stopping/restarting the service in the Applet

It even says "Print Spooler Service" is not running even as Services.exe shows that it is. I have stopped the service, started it, rebooted. The computer just does not know it's there anymore. Any ideas?

Thanks Cap! That was the problem. I went into C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and copied the Spoolsv.exe from that location into the System32 folder. When it asked for confirmation of replacing the file the System32 file was a different size on the disk, so something had indeed changed it. It works perfectly now! Thanks again!
