Another point here - there's no freeware to work with the PRO/GRE radios - there is for the Unidens.

Also keep in mind that the PSR radios includes the USB cable in the package - the RS scanners require you to make a separate purchase

best regards..Mike

Thanks. I found one on line that someone might let me have for 350 with the ARC500 software. So that is covered. .. Im guesssing you are leaning towards the Uniden? Especially since you are in my area?

Thanks for the link.

Whoa that filter issue sounds like its not worth it.. If the GRE is that bad, then Id be SOL. I dont have any way to handle them etc, so I have to use the user reviews to make my decision. I dont want to get my first digital scanner and have it suck because of the frontend issues.

I used your link and my closest tower is a couple of miles away and it doesn't cause me a problem with a gain antenna outside . I think the people that complain about GRE and cell sites are talking about driving by one where they are within blocks of the site.

/\ and you dont have many issues with your GRE? I just dont want to be stuck with a scanner that is getting all kinds of sensitivity issues. but I'd also like to get a scanner that will perform its best for me.

Yeah I think Im leaning towards the GRE

I just wnat to make sure Im not that close to any cell towers, as they suffer from the sensitivity issue.

according to this site

Cell Phone Towers - CellReception.com

I have a tower 2.5 miles away... Does that seem acceptable?

But now I see one possibly 1.8 miles away
Now these are driving directions. Im not sure how to find true distance.
I have one @ 1/2 mile south and another @ 1/2 mile north. Neither bother me even when driving by them. I have 6 GRE made digital scanners.

No, I don't have any issues and I am using a gain antenna mounted outside to hear 800MHz from the entire county.

Being a quarter mile from the base of a tower in which the antenna is also at least 100+ feet in the air will not desense your scanner, that distance is fine.

if you were standing right under the tower, in the room with the actual transmitter, or worse right next to the actual TX antenna, then any radio will get desensed and with enough power, burned out

Exactly. I think some of of the comments about the GREs sensitivity is heresy and exaggeration. That's JMO though.

ThankS. Now onto programming it... now that's going to be impossible.

Down load the software and get started. You should be done by the time the scanner arrives and you can just hookup the scanner, do the upload, and be scanning within a few minutes of it's arrival.
