got to be the most complicated scanner of all time to program, back to my trusty pro 97 with 106 in the garbage

Take some time and just sit and mess with the radio. Down load PSREdit or Win500 and program the radio with the software. When you are programming the radio forget about how you program your pro 97. You have entered the Object Oriented Scanning realm. Check out this wiki page, it should help you. Feel free to contact me and I will attempt to walk you through the process, as well as answer any questions you may have. Just don't give up as once you get the hang of this new radio you will wonder how you managed with out some of these capabilities.

Buying programming software like ARC 500 makes it easy to program. I have never had a problem with mine to program it for my local area or when I travel. But if you want to throw it away donate it to a chairitable thrift store so someone who appreciates the radio can buy it.

---My opinion--- The ARC 500 is good for those who can handle it. I cannot. As long as edit & conv, work--Im thrilled. I think I will donate that dvd-P.O.S..and a feww hundred other names I can call it...I will keep the cable,it's worth $35.00--dvd aint worth a s*&$....P.O.S.

If you get WIN500 I'm sure there has to be someone in your area who can five you a file that you can load in to get you started. Don't give up too quickly. I've only been doing this since September and I program mine every week for a new town. If I can do it ANYBODY can.

I had a friend program mine the first time and scanned very well. I have a 197-106-500 & 600 now.
I have been able to add TGRP's and TSYS's with key pad and its not that hard. I will admit i made
a few mistakes along the way but the scanner gives you some escape routes. I made notes along
the way to make it much easier to understand then the manual. I am considering software now just to
look at the entire scanner programming. Dont chuck it in the trash or what i believe to be putting it on a
shelf to collect dust.

Once you get used to the way the menus work, it's not all that hard to program.

I find it easier to program a pro-197, even by hand, than it is to program earlier scanners like the Pro-2021 and Pro-2004.

after numerous youtube viewing and various adult beverages, I've found the best route for me has been manual programming of this cumbersome device, I've managed to load an 800 smart zone, P25 system, and various conventional frequencies into the scanner , customizing back lights and LED's for various uses, I may just hang on to this scanner for a few more days ,,,

Just press the Search key, if you are frustrated. Also, if your area has preprogrammed data, you could load that and have the scanner running in one minute.

Neither the cable or software program, regardless of the one you have, is any good if you are not a premium subscriber.

Shute it is

You can still use it as long as you don't mind copying and pasting. Plus a little typing. But it's still a whole lot faster than trying to do it with the scanner alone.

You have to clear your mind of how other scanners are programmed. The PRO-106 and others like it are a completely different beast.
I love mine, and once you figure out how different it is and how to get a handle on it you will too.
